Announcement
Nature is rescinding the 2017 Scientific Guidance Award granted to Carlos López-Otín, a molecular biologist at the University of Oviedo, Spain. Following complaints received by Nature after the announcement of the 2017 Nature Scientific Guidance Awards, problems with the integrity of images in papers co-authored by López-Otín were identified. The revocation of the award reflects the judges’ view that high-quality scientific guidance in the laboratory should not lead to significant issues of this kind. It is not a judgment on the overall quality of López-Otín’s research.
Joint winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award: Carlos Belmonte – founding director of the Institute of Neuroscience in Alicante and Margarita Salas – former director of the CSIC Center for Molecular Biology Severo Ochoa.
Joint winners of the Mid-Career Achievement Award: Carlos López-Otín – University of Oviedo and Luis Turner – founding director of the Institute for Photon Science in Barcelona.
