Guide to Creating Your Own Resume

Contact Information

When you create your resume, it should include your contact information. Your resume should include your name, email address, phone number, and a link to your online profile or LinkedIn page if you have one.

Your Address: You might want to include your actual home address on your resume, mentioning the city and state (many job seekers omit their street address for privacy reasons, which is fine as most communication is now done via email and text messages or phone calls. However, it may be helpful to include your city and state so the employer knows you are local and won’t need to relocate for the job).

Professional Email: Make sure your email address is accurate and professional (instead of “cute”); if you have an address that includes references to your hobbies or interests, create a new account using a free service like Google or Yahoo with just your name, such as Jane.Doe@gmail.com.

Phone: Your voicemail message should also sound professional. First impressions matter, and recruiters who call your phone number will draw conclusions based on your tone and language in the voicemail.

Qualifications Summary

In the past, objectives were usually listed on resumes. But in reality, objectives on resumes are all quite similar; everyone is trying to get a job.

Effective resumes are marketing documents that sell your professional services to the employer by showing how your training and experience can be the “solution” to what they are looking for in their next employee.

Instead of listing personal objectives, make it easier for recruiters by creating a short “Qualifications Summary” that outlines the skills and talents you bring to the table. It’s a written version of your elevator pitch, giving them a quick insight into who you are, what your experience is, and how your skill set meets the qualifications listed in their job posting.

An example of a qualifications summary for a graphic designer could be: “Graphic designer with 10 years of experience in print and digital media. Proficient in InDesign, Quark, and Photoshop. Strong foundation in HTML and CSS for creating websites.”

In this qualifications summary and the subsequent “Experience” section, try to use the specific industry keywords mentioned in the job postings you are applying for.

Many companies now use automated applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen the resumes they receive. These systems are programmed to scan for the presence and frequency of specific keywords within the resumes and accompanying cover letters. If your resume does not contain at least some of these keywords, it may never reach the hiring manager’s desk.

Experience

The most common format for a resume is to list your work history in reverse chronological order, with the most recent experiences first.

You are not required to include every role you have played in the past; if you are an experienced manager, you do not need to list jobs you had in college or internships.

In the work history, include the names of your employers, the dates of employment (with months and years), your job title, and your accomplishments in each position.

Focus on achievements rather than just listing responsibilities. For example, if you were in public relations, instead of saying “distributed press releases,” you could say “distributed over 200 press releases to 500 media outlets with a 50% publication rate.” Try to quantify these achievements with tangible figures or monetary amounts or percentages whenever possible.

Use the present tense to describe your job responsibilities in the position you currently hold; previous roles should be described in the past tense.

Education

In

Your education section should include any university or postgraduate work. If you have a bachelor’s degree or higher, there is no need to include your high school name. If you do not have a college degree, it is perfectly acceptable to include where you attended high school and your graduation date.

If you have a strong cumulative GPA (3.5 or higher), feel free to include that in the education section. If you are a recent graduate, it is also a good strategy to mention significant school activities (especially those that demonstrate leadership). These activities include membership in honor societies, Greek organizations, and volunteer roles in campus/community.
