Google AI Research Lab in Bangalore

Humanity has relied on technology to solve problems and improve the quality of life for centuries, from sharing knowledge through printed newspapers to the internet for building small businesses. Currently, artificial intelligence is opening the door to a new era of technological advancement. With its global engineering talent, robust computer science programs, and entrepreneurial drive, India has the potential to lead the use of AI in tackling major challenges. In fact, there are many examples of this in India today, ranging from detecting diabetes in the eye to improving flood predictions and teaching children to read.

Establishing Google’s Research Lab in India

To take this a step further, we have established Google’s Research Lab in India – an AI lab we will be launching in Bangalore. This team will focus on two pillars: First, developing foundational computer science and AI research by building a strong team and collaborating with the research community across the country. Second, applying this research to tackle major problems in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and education, in addition to using it to make applications and services used by billions of people more useful.

Leading Google’s Research Lab in India

Dr. Manish Gupta, a renowned computer scientist and ACM fellow, will lead Google’s Research Lab in India, bringing expertise in deep learning, video analytics, education, translators, and computer systems. We are also excited to have Professor Melind Tamby join us as the director of AI for social good, where Professor Tamby will build a research program focused on applying AI to address major challenges in fields like healthcare, agriculture, and education.

The Role of Google’s Research Lab in India

The lab in Bangalore will be part of Google’s global network of researchers, participating in conferences, publishing research in scientific papers, and closely collaborating with one another. We are also exploring opportunities to collaborate with the scientific community and academic institutions in India to help train young talent and support shared programs, tools, and resources.

The Importance of Google’s Research Lab in India

Establishing Google’s Research Lab in India is an important step for us, and for me personally as well. As someone who grew up in India and studied at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, where I learned a great deal from the community there, I am grateful that we now have the opportunity to contribute to advancing research and play a role in building the AI community in India.
