Should You Mention Your Address?
There are career consultants who advise completely removing your physical address from your resume and cover letter, as it may reduce your chances of being considered for the position and could lead to potential identity theft. However, many hiring managers may view the omission of your physical address as a red flag, wondering why you removed it even if they noticed that the last job mentioned on your resume is 1000 miles away from them. Until removing physical addresses in resumes becomes commonplace, it’s best to be upfront and explain your current address and your relocation plans.
How to Mention Relocation in Your Cover Letter
You will usually benefit more from addressing the fact that you are relocating upfront. This makes it clear that you are not just applying to move to the new location. After all, the primary motivation for applying for any job should be the nature of the work, followed by the appeal of the organization. You can mention that you will be relocating at the beginning of your cover letter or near the end. But in either case, any mention of the fact that you will be relocating should be preceded by a statement related to your interest in the job itself.
Option 1: Mention it at the Beginning of Your Letter
This type of statement can be included at the beginning of the first paragraph of your cover letter.
For example:
I am very excited to learn about Maximum Communications’ search for a Marketing Coordinator. I am very interested in considering this position as it will allow me to apply my project management skills and will tap into my passion for event planning. The current growth trajectory at Maximum Communications, including the recent addition of Company Pepsi as a client, motivates me to pursue this opportunity. My wife and I are planning to relocate to the Seattle area within the next two months to be closer to her family, so the timing of this position opening is ideal.
Option 2: Mention it at the End of Your Letter
The best way to handle the relocation might be to include a statement in the final paragraph mentioning travel to the area. This allows you to focus on the job and your qualifications at the beginning of the letter, giving you more time to clarify that the employer will not be responsible for your travel costs or relocation expenses.
As mentioned above, institutions typically expect to fund travel and bring in candidates from external locations for interviews for higher-level and hard-to-fill positions. However, there may be a preference for local candidates for entry-level jobs.
For example:
I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss this position. I will be in Seattle for a conference (or to search for an apartment or to network with local college alumni) in two weeks and will be available to meet at that time. However, I would also be happy to travel, at my own expense, for an interview at a time that works for you. Please know that I also have the resources necessary to relocate and start work immediately upon my hiring. Thank you for your time, consideration, and future response.

Mr. James Redstone
Executive Director
GRE Company
222 Market Street
San Diego, California 20165
Dear Mr. Redstone,
I heard with great interest about the Sales Coordinator position at GRE from my supervisor, James Gray. He recommended contacting you directly, as we were discussing my next career opportunity and my family’s relocation to the San Diego area.
In
ABC, I have documented my contributions to the sales team. I have consistently exceeded my sales targets by double digits, and I have maintained my customer satisfaction ratings at the highest standards. I have demonstrated my organizational and communication skills in a leadership position among entry-level employees.
As you know, ABC is a company similar in size and scope to GRE. I believe the opportunity to continue my career in sales with your team would be a great chance to help your company become more successful.
I will be in San Diego several times in the coming months and would love to meet with you at a convenient time to discuss how I can contribute to your sales team.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Susan Jones (signature of the paper letter)
Susan Jones
