The Purpose of Tough Questions
Tough questions are designed to give the interviewer the opportunity to understand who you are and whether you are a good fit for the company. Try to provide specific stories and examples from your past work experiences in your answers, focusing particularly on how these experiences have shaped you as an employee.
Personal Questions
Personal questions are aimed at exploring your personality traits. These questions focus on who you are on a personal level. Your answers to these questions will help the interviewer determine if you align with what the organization is looking for in the employees they hire.
1. Are you prepared to fail?
Employers want to know how you handle failure. Do you learn from it and use the experience to improve your performance in the future?
While I don’t enjoy failure, it does happen sometimes – especially when you’re unsure of the best way to accomplish a project and choose the wrong approach. Not everything you try will work, and you just have to accept that and know when to change direction. I learned this the first time when I was a new project manager at Building Designers, where I was tasked with coordinating the installation of a green HVAC system in a historic hotel. It became clear after construction began that the materials we were using would lead to a significant cost increase – so I had to resort to “plan B” to deliver the products we promised. You should always have a “plan B”!

2. If you could relive the last 10 years of your life, what would you do differently?
This is a “trick” question that employers sometimes use to see if they can get you to reveal character flaws. So, be cautious and don’t provide too much information. It’s also acceptable to say that there is nothing you regret in the last ten years.
