The Conversation
Felix: Today we are joined by Patrick and Luis from Patrick Adair Designs. Patrick Adair Designs creates rings made from materials like carbon fiber, titanium, and other rare materials. It started in 2015 and is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Welcome.
Patrick: Thank you.
Luis: Hi. Welcome.
Felix: I think you told us that you have always been a creative person and interested in business, and you have been doing projects like this your whole life, but this is your first real scalable project. First, tell us about the other projects you started. How was that period?
Patrick: I started this company when I was a senior in high school. I was very young in all of the previous projects, so they were less serious. For example, in fifth grade, I stopped selling gum out of my backpack at one point. I was always trying to sell things to anyone around me. I was selling things on eBay. And there was one cool thing I used to do, which was making heads for the electronic music artist known as Deadmau5. I started making these heads when I was in the first year of high school. I was making them by hand using similar techniques to those that I currently use to make the rings. I would sell them on eBay and they would sell for about $500. That was awesome, and I loved doing it. That was my entire childhood, I was always trying to sell things and see what I could do to be an entrepreneur.
Felix: What differentiates the work you are doing now making rings at Patrick Adair Designs from the other projects you have done?
Patrick: I think a lot of it, whether it was selling things to my classmates or making heads for Deadmau5, didn’t have much seriousness. I couldn’t use web setups to create a site and sell gum for a higher price than what you could get at the supermarket. So, it wasn’t a real and good business; it was just something fun. But with the rings from Patrick Adair Designs, things were different. The rings meant a lot to people, and they were willing to pay a lot of money for a ring that meant a lot to them. So, it wasn’t just something fun; it was a real and serious business. And that was the main difference for me.
Felix:
What distinguishes this work you are doing now making rings at Patrick Adair Designs from other projects you have undertaken?
Patrick: I think a lot of it, whether it was selling stuff to my classmates or making mouse heads for Deadmau5, didn’t have much seriousness behind it.
