What makes you a good fit for the employer? There are many different dimensions that affect how well you match if you are hired. Perhaps the most prominent aspect of fit is whether your resume aligns with the job qualifications. Interviewers will want to know if you have the interests, personality, skills, knowledge, education, and relevant experience to excel in the targeted position. Analyze the job requirements and provide examples of how you embody the key qualifications in academic, extracurricular, volunteer, and previous work activities. You need to show the employer why you would be a good fit for the job.

Company Culture

Of course, good fit goes beyond your resume. Employers will look for individuals who match the company culture well on both a personal and professional level. For example, if the company values innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship, hiring managers will want to see evidence of a pattern of those traits in your work history and in your responses to interview questions. Make sure you research the company culture while preparing for the interview so you can present your strengths in the context of the organization’s culture. Be prepared to answer interview questions about the company culture as well—fit is important in both directions. Pay attention to the office atmosphere to get a sense of how you might fit into the company culture overall. What is the required attire? Does everyone seem casual and relaxed, or formal and serious? Is the work environment open, or is everyone in their private offices? These signs can tell you a lot about the company culture.

Management and Leadership Style

Another element of fit is how you might respond to the supervisory or leadership style of your potential manager. For example, if the hiring person knows that a certain manager is dismissive of employees, they may look for a candidate who is self-sufficient, rather than someone who thrives on feedback or guidance. Similarly, if the supervisor is known for a commanding style, an interviewer may hesitate to hire a candidate who prefers to work independently. You will rarely get insight into your potential manager’s style before the interview day, but observe their approach as much as possible during your interactions throughout the interview process. Learn as much as possible about their style to understand how well your way of working aligns. If you have the opportunity, ask other people who report to the potential supervisor to describe their management approach. This may give you a more realistic view of your potential boss’s leadership style than the boss’s own answers.

The interview is an opportunity for both parties to determine if they would work well together. Consider it your chance to get to know each other and learn as much as possible about one another. If it doesn’t seem like a good fit, take the necessary time to figure out what type of job would be a perfect match for you.
