What are Instagram Hashtags?
Hashtags are your best friend for sorting and finding content on Instagram. Hashtags are created using the symbol “#” and are associated with the things you post on Instagram, becoming clickable and searchable topics.
Any word or phrase can be turned into a functioning hashtag, as long as “#” is placed before it. Numbers can be used within hashtags, but spaces and special characters cannot. On Instagram, most creators use hashtags to join trends and help the audience discover their content.
How do Hashtags Work on Instagram?
You can use up to 30 hashtags in each Instagram post. These posts must be public – if your profile is set to private, none of the hashtags you use will appear on discovery pages.
When users click on a hashtag, they are taken to its discovery page, which displays all the public content associated with it. People will click on hashtags they are interested in or search for them as a way to find content on Instagram.
Users can also follow hashtags they are interested in, ensuring that relevant content appears in their feed regularly.
Hashtags in Instagram Stories
Instagram Stories have a hashtag sticker, allowing you to place functional hashtags on your stories. Users who click on them will be taken to the hashtag feed, just as if they had clicked on a hashtag in your post. Hashtags in Instagram Reels
Hashtags work the same way in Reels, helping the Instagram algorithm categorize your content to appear in the user’s feed.
Do Hashtags Still Work on Instagram?
Hashtags are still a valid tool for helping your Instagram account grow, but the way hashtags work on Instagram has changed a bit.
Essentially, the Instagram algorithm will reward engaging content by featuring it more prominently on hashtag pages and discovery pages.
This means that the best way to use hashtags on Instagram is to create high-quality content and place hashtags on it to keep users on the Instagram platform. When this content starts to receive interactions, the algorithm should notice it and boost your post.
So, while adding hashtags to your content won’t automatically mean more views or followers, hashtags are a legitimate way to increase the visibility of content that is already performing well.
Given their importance on the platform, Instagram has expanded the functionality of hashtags. For example, brands can now add hashtags to the profile section in their bio.

Best Instagram Hashtag Generators
No matter how many hashtags you wish to use, typing in such a large number of characters can be time-consuming, especially since autocorrect does not fix spelling mistakes in hashtags. If you ask any social media manager, they will tell you that this isn’t their favorite task.
Fortunately, there are many Instagram hashtag generators and hashtag search engines that can help streamline the search process. Here are some tools to consider.
Best-Hashtags
Best-Hashtags is a straightforward tool for hashtag research. Its algorithm calculates the best Instagram hashtags for your social content based on historical data. Just type in the desired hashtag and Best-Hashtags will generate a list of hashtags in different categories such as:
–
Best relevant hashtags
– Top 10 hashtags based on popularity on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok
– Low difficulty hashtags
– Exact match hashtags
You can also discover new hashtags on the new hashtags pages and the best hashtags.
SISTRIX
SISTRIX’s Instagram hashtag generator is another great tool to quickly find successful hashtags. Enter a hashtag or topic, and you will see the top 30 hashtags to use. Get more recommendations by searching for other related hashtag variations based on your main search.
The tool is completely free for up to 25 queries per day. If you want more extensive research, you will need to sign up for a SISTRIX account.
Influencer Marketing Hub
This Instagram hashtag generator is different. Instead of searching for hashtags by topic, you can upload an image, and the tool will suggest suitable hashtags for you to use. In the following example, we uploaded an image from the Surreals NFT collection to see the hashtags it would generate.
You can choose up to five keywords. Once selected, the tool will reveal the optimal list of hashtags to use in your post.
Inflact
Inflact is another useful tool for Instagram hashtags for posts, stories, and reels. The easiest way to use the tool is through keywords. For example, if you type “Paris” into the generator, it will reveal a variety of different hashtags that contain the keyword. The hashtags are categorized by frequent, average, and rare use.
Inflact’s smart search tool also reveals organic hashtags or those that are written together in the same post.
Keyword Tool
Keyword Tool is a paid service that helps businesses discover keywords across various platforms, including Instagram hashtags. It has a geolocation feature, allowing you to identify popular hashtags that are trending in your audience’s area.
Most Instagram hashtag generators are free. If you are not ready to invest in a tool for this purpose, a cost-effective method might be to use a general social media tool. You can create posts on your desktop and copy and paste the hashtags or hashtag groups into the caption as needed. Since all these tools can now post directly to Instagram on your behalf, they can save you a few steps.
Types of Instagram Hashtags
Understanding which hashtags to use is a crucial part of developing a strong hashtag strategy that increases your reach and boosts engagement.
Different types of hashtags serve different purposes, and a good strategy includes a mix of them. Learn how to verify your Instagram account and use hashtags from your verified account to expand your reach.
Brand Hashtags
These hashtags should be included in your Instagram bio and be exclusive to your store. They can be used to increase awareness of your brand, and you can encourage users to share content that uses these hashtags. Examples include #LiftUpTheGirls from Harper Wilde, #shwoodshop from Shwood Eyewear, and #swlfamily from So Worth Loving. Use only one or two brand hashtags in each post.
Location Hashtags
If you have products targeting local audiences, use them to your advantage. Are you selling quirky mugs featuring the United States logos? Use #FloridaLife or #NewYorkDrinks to connect with the right audience. You can also tag posts based on location to reach a specific audience in the area.
Community and Industry Hashtags
The majority of brands and businesses, regardless of size, use at least one hashtag that represents their product or industry. Often, these hashtags are designed to be simple and easy to remember. To find popular community hashtags in your niche, check out trending posts from competitors in your field. Look at the hashtags they are using.
Hashtags
Daily Hashtags
Popular daily hashtags include #MondayMotivation and #ThrowbackThursday. However, there are many tags for daily challenges, themes, or common experiences. Look for them by examining the tags in posts from specific days or search for the days of the week and see what appears in the search results.
Entertainment Hashtags
These hashtags are not for increasing your audience, but for expanding the relationship with the audience you already have. These phrases often have little connection to the brand itself, but are more related to the context of the post containing the hashtag. In the example below, both #shopitlikeithot and #getitgirl focus on entertainment.
General Audience Hashtags
General audience hashtags are broad tags that can apply to almost any post. They are used frequently, meaning they are searched for often as well. These hashtags can give your posts a significant reach boost and put them in front of a targeted audience. Examples include #instagood and #lovelife.
Occasion-Based Hashtags
You might want to remind your followers that it’s okay to have a #caseofthemondays or to appreciate #summerrain. Hashtags related to occasions can be relevant to a particular holiday, time of year, or even time of day. Users love timely content and are more likely to search for holiday and seasonal posts specifically. The example below uses the fitting hashtag #sunsout to place a product – sunglasses – in front of an interested audience.
Trending Hashtags
Trending hashtags are tags that gain traction due to current events, advertising campaigns, viral nature, or pop culture. Hashtags change continuously, just like fashion trends and slang. Whether Apple is announcing a new version of the iPhone or it’s election day anywhere in the country, trending hashtags won’t give you lasting results, but they can provide meaningful returns when used correctly.
Niche Hashtags
Some products cater to an audience with narrow interests, with corresponding niche hashtags. People who buy their virtual reality systems are likely to be interested in the latest technology. Customers who care about healthy eating might search for phrases like #organic or #eatinggreen. Use specific niche hashtags to connect with a highly relevant audience.
Special Event Hashtags
Sometimes, hashtags can act as alert lights, notifying users of special events happening in your store. Are you planning to hold a contest? Hashtags like #contestalert and #instagiveaway can help you find an interested audience. Similarly, hashtags like #flashsale and #BOGO can help you find deal hunters and let followers know about special deals available online.
Tips for Using Hashtags on Instagram
Be careful about the number of hashtags you use
You can use up to 30 hashtags in each post on Instagram. Whether you should do that or not is a whole other question.
Instagram’s last piece of advice is to be selective with your hashtags and use only 3-5 in each post. However, research suggests that using more hashtags generally leads to increased engagement.
When it comes to the ideal number of hashtags, the data is inconsistent. Some marketers swear by using only two hashtags while others use all 30 hashtags. In reality, the ideal number for each post might be something you discover through testing. Should Instagram hashtags be visible?
No one wants to read through 30 different hashtags, or even six for that matter, just to access the content. Large blocks of hard-to-read text also look visually unappealing.
Due to
Many brands choose to hide most of their hashtags by carefully placing them underneath the “See more” option. Some take this a step further by adding significant extra spaces outside of “See more” to visually separate a large portion of the hashtags from the rest of the description. Some brands may place hashtags in a separate comment on the post, but this can lead to decreased effectiveness of the hashtags.
For most brands, the best option is simply to ensure that your hashtags are separated by at least one line from the caption and hidden under the “See more” option. This focuses attention on your caption and increases the likelihood that it will be read. It also looks cleaner.
The exception is if you are using one or two hashtags for branding or entertainment purposes. In this case, keep them at the top if necessary, and make sure they are listed first or written on the same line as your caption on Instagram. This way, users are more likely to read them.
Even though you may see others doing it, there is no reason to use more than one line of separation for hashtags. If users click on “See more,” you don’t want them to have to scroll forever to get to the comments, as there’s a good chance they won’t stick around and leave a comment of their own.
