1. Ensure Your Goals Are SMART
SMART goals give you clarity and a deadline to achieve them. SMART goals are as follows:
– Specific: Your goals should be clearly defined. “I want to earn more money” is vague. “I want to earn $10,000 a month” is specific.
– Measurable: You need to be able to measure your goal so you know you’ve achieved it. This is where specificity helps. What constitutes “more” money? A specific dollar amount is measurable.
– Achievable: It’s good to set goals that challenge you and make you strive for achievement, but you make yourself prone to frustration and failure if your goal is impossible.
– Relevant: Your goals should align with your ultimate life plans.
– Time-bound: You’ve set a date by which you need to achieve your goal.
2. Work Backwards to Identify Sub-goals
The challenge in achieving goals is that the deadline is often far away, leading many to put off taking action until it’s too late. Instead, you can consider the time available to you and the goal you want to achieve, and create sub-goals that lead you towards the larger goal.
For example, if your goal is to earn $10,000 a month in your business within six months, create sub-goals for how much money you will earn by the end of the first month (e.g., $2,000) and by the end of the third month (e.g., $5,000). You will know if you’re on track when the first and third months arrive and you have or have not achieved your sub-goal.
3. Determine What Needs to Happen to Achieve Your Goals
During this step, be specific about what is necessary to achieve both sub-goals and larger goals within the set time frame. Using the example of a goal of earning $10,000 a month, to earn more money, you need to acquire more clients or customers. In this step, you want to determine the number of clients you need to earn $5,000 and $10,000 a month in your business. How many potential clients need to enter your sales funnel? How many proposals must you present to close a deal?
4. Identify Actions Required to Achieve the Goals
What tasks do you need to consistently perform to achieve both the sub-goal and the larger goal? For example, if you need to speak to 10 people to close two deals, what actions must you take to find those 10 people? If you need 100 clients to speak to 10 people, what actions do you need to take to find 100 clients?
In business, tasks in this section typically involve marketing, but they also include delivering a quality product or service and maintaining customer satisfaction so they continue to return and/or refer new clients to you.
5. Schedule the Actions
Once you’ve completed step four, you should have a list of tasks to complete to achieve your goal. Now it’s time to place those tasks in your schedule by creating a daily plan. These are the tasks you perform every day to generate leads and proposals. These are also the tasks you perform to create and deliver your product or service.
If you’re starting a part-time business around an already busy life, it may be difficult to add more tasks to your daily routine, but it’s critical to achieve your goals. One way to make everything work is to learn how to manage and utilize your time effectively.
6. Commit to Execution
Once you’ve completed the previous steps, you should have your daily schedule and goals to aim for as you work towards your target. The next step is to stick to your schedule. Complete the daily tasks you’ve assigned to yourself. When you feel like things aren’t going well, look for ways to keep yourself motivated. This seems intuitive, yet most people don’t achieve their goals because they don’t work regularly and consistently. In most cases, it’s not the plan that fails, but people simply give up.
While
By doing this, track your achievements and results. Set aside time each month or so to evaluate how successful your plan is and adjust it if you are not making the progress you want.
The real test of whether you will succeed in working from home is not just having a good plan, but actively working to implement that plan. Many understand that they have a plan but later give up. The answer is to feel passionate about your goals, build ways to celebrate small successes, and always keep your eye on the prize.
