Should You Include a Personal Photo on Your Resume?
There is no single correct answer to this question, although it has been considered a bad idea for most job seekers. The answer could be no, maybe, or even yes, depending on your circumstances. Or you might think of a creative solution to show your face as a job seeker.
Why Not Add a Personal Photo?
Although you can add a photo in some cases, it doesn’t mean you should do so. Assess the value that the photo will add, if any, before you start rewriting your resume. There are also ways you can have employers see your photo without having to add it to your resume.
Option One: Include a Link to Your LinkedIn Profile
LinkedIn profiles typically include a photo and are widely used by candidates in their job search and by recruiters in their talent search. If you believe that your appearance will be an asset to your targeted job, adding a link to your LinkedIn profile in your resume is a safe and acceptable way to present your appearance.
Option Two: Add a Photo to Your Resume for Networking Purposes
There may be another exception to the accepted judgment about adding photos if your resume is primarily used for networking purposes. If you are distributing your resume at conferences or other events where you will interact with many people, including a photo can help new acquaintances remember you. Furthermore, if you are referred by your contacts to others who do not know you, you can add a photo to your resume if you think your appearance will be an asset. You can mention to your contacts in networking that you would be happy to provide them with a version of your resume without a photo if they prefer to forward your document to others for formal job evaluation.
Option Three: Attach a Business Card Containing Your Photo to Your Resume
Another option for personal interaction is to add a business card featuring a photo you’ve prepared specifically for a job search. If you share both your resume and the card with your contact information, they can pass both along if you are referred for a job or to connect with another network.
Where Should You Place the Photo on Your Resume?
If you decide to add a photo to your resume, the recommended place is at the top of the page. The photo should be a professional headshot, similar to the image you used on your LinkedIn profile. Here are some tips for taking and choosing a professional photo.
