Benefits of Work-Life Balance and Improving Productivity

According to research conducted by the Corporate Executive Board, effective work-life benefits encourage employees to work hard and motivate them not to leave their jobs. Contrary to traditional belief, both men and women share similar views on the benefits of work-life balance. The study indicates that high-performing employees value work-life balance nearly as much as other employees and have similar preferences in this regard.

Current Work-Life Benefits

The study found that current work-life benefits can be improved. Only 16% of employees are satisfied with the work-life benefits practices in their organizations. One-third of workers are scaling back work to meet their personal commitments. The vast majority of people are not even aware of the benefits available to them. Less than one-third of employees recognize the work-life benefits that their employers provide. Work-life benefits may include remote work, flexible hours, and on-site or subsidized childcare.

Work-Life Benefits Desired by Employees

Employees prefer work-life benefits that help them manage their workload. For example, they like flexible work schedules and a reasonable amount of work with expected hours. When asked about the top five desired practices from employers, 63% of employees mentioned a flexible work schedule and 62% mentioned a reasonable amount of work, with 13% being the average for all other work-life benefits practices.

Recommendations for Employers

The study recommends that companies enhance work-life benefits and communicate them to employees. It is not necessarily required for employees to utilize work-life benefits to achieve positive returns for the organization. The study suggests that awareness of available benefits is slightly more important than their consumption. The strongest factors in increasing awareness and utilization of work-life benefits are clearly using peer work-life benefits, having clear implementation guidelines, and empowering employees to control the use of these benefits. The report noted significant geographic differences in work-life benefit preferences.
