How to End a Cover Letter (with Closing Examples)

When writing a cover letter or sending an email to apply for a job, it’s important to end your message as professionally as possible. Conclude your message with a formal closing, followed by your signature.

Examples of Cover Letter Closings

Here is a list of examples of cover letter closings that are appropriate for cover letters and other employment-related correspondence, such as thank-you notes or emails to schedule interviews or pass along references.

Sincerely,
Best regards,
Warm regards,
Kindest regards,
Warmest regards,
Best wishes,
Yours faithfully,
Yours respectfully,
Thank you,
Thank you for your consideration

Closings to Avoid

A cover letter is formal correspondence, so it’s important not to be overly friendly or informal when writing it. Below are some closings that may be used when sending an email or writing a letter to a friend, but they are not appropriate for a cover letter.

With all my love,
Best wishes,
Warmest regards,
I look forward to hearing from you eagerly,
With love,
Cheers,
Your faithful friend,
Any shortcuts (like Thx or any other inappropriate abbreviation)
Any emojis (no smiley faces)
Sent from my phone (if your phone includes this automatically, you can remove it in settings)

How to Sign a Cover Letter

For a printed letter, follow the closing with a comma. Then, on a new line, write your name. Leave space above your written name for a handwritten signature.

Sincerely,
Signature (for printed letter)
Your Name

If you are sending an email, you can add your contact information below your name. For example:

Best regards,
Your Name
Your Email Address
Your Phone Number
Your LinkedIn Profile Link

Whichever closing you choose, always make sure to capitalize the first letter of it.

Setting Up an Email Signature

To simplify things, you can set up an email signature that includes your contact information.

Note: An email signature allows recipients to easily see how to contact you and saves you time from writing your information repeatedly.

Use a Professional Email Account

It is wise, when job hunting, to set up a dedicated email account (and accompanying address). This will help ensure you don’t miss emails from potential employers who may be interested in interviewing you. It will also provide a professional-looking email address on your resume and cover letter. Your email address should simply incorporate your name (e.g., “[email protected]” or “[email protected]”).

Job candidates often use their personal email accounts to apply for jobs, frequently using “quirky” email addresses like “[email protected]” or “[email protected].” This common practice often raises eyebrows for hiring managers and raises doubts about whether the candidate is serious and qualified for the position they are applying for.

Note: It’s best to avoid this practice and keep your professional and personal email accounts separate for safety.

What to Include in Your Signature

In your signature, include your email address and phone number. You may add a link to your LinkedIn profile to facilitate showcasing your skills, achievements, educational background, and work history to your recipients. Depending on your field, you might also consider including a link to your Twitter account; if you do, ensure that your account is professional and appropriate for potential employers to view.

Note: Cover letters, whether sent via email or traditional mail channels, will always be the first impression you give a potential employer. Ensure that this impression is good by following the “best practices” outlined in these links so your cover letter shines.
