What to Include in a Cover Letter

The goal of any cover letter is to provide insight into your qualifications that the hiring manager may not gain from the resume alone. When applying for a managerial role, this context can be even more important. You are trying to show not only that you have the skills to do a job, but also to inspire others to do theirs as well.

Note: A good cover letter for a managerial position will include information about your achievements, the leadership roles you have held, and how you can help the organization succeed if hired for the position.

What to Include in a Cover Letter

Include the skills the employer is looking for

Scan the job posting, looking for specific managerial skills required in a candidate. Generally, these skills will relate to five managerial functions: planning, organizing, coordinating, managing, and controlling. Include keywords related to these functions, and then match your qualifications with their list.

Note: The more your cover letter and resume align with the job requirements, the greater your chances of being selected for an interview for the position.

Quantify your accomplishments

Including measurable successes (numbers, percentages, growth statistics) is a way to show what you have achieved in the companies you have worked for. This is especially important for high-level positions since employers expect a track record of success in the individuals they hire for managerial roles.

Sending a Cover Letter via Email

If you are sending a cover letter via email, your goal will be the same – to show that your qualifications, achievements, and experience make you the best candidate for the managerial role. However, the delivery method will be slightly different, as space is limited in an email communication. You need to grab the hiring manager’s attention immediately and prevent them from skimming past your message. Here’s how to do that:

Use

Subject lines with purpose. The best option for you is to include your name and the job title in the subject line of your email. This reduces the likelihood that your message gets filtered out and saves the hiring manager’s time – they will immediately know what your message is about.

Keep it short and concise. Three short paragraphs are sufficient. Anything more and you risk losing their attention.

Include your contact information in your signature. Skip the main heading and their addresses, and instead, include your contact information in your email signature. There’s no need to include the employer’s contact information.
