for many creative individuals, making jewelry is a great way to unwind after a long day at work. But what if those creations start to attract the attention of friends and even strangers? At this point, you might ask yourself, “Can my hobby turn into a business?”

Learn How to Start a Jewelry Business in Nine Steps

Starting your own jewelry business requires an understanding of the jewelry industry. In fact, there is fierce competition in this field. The global jewelry market is expected to reach $418.9 billion by 2026. However, there is still room for newcomers who can find an untapped niche or offer a fresh perspective on the craft.

If you are looking for a creative way to make money, keep reading. This comprehensive guide on starting your own jewelry business includes tips from professionals, tactical advice, and inspiration from certified designers and business owners.

Step 1: Find Your Niche in the Jewelry Industry

There are several categories within the jewelry market – ranging from inexpensive plastic beads to precious metals and gemstones. One of the first questions you should ask yourself is: What will I sell?

You can choose from luxury jewelry or everyday jewelry (also known as fashion jewelry) or something in between. Each of these categories has its own materials, production processes, price points, and customer profiles:

Luxury jewelry: Luxury jewelry is on the high end of the market and is characterized by the following traits: made from precious and semi-precious metals and gemstones, higher price points, crafted with excellent artistry and usually not mass-produced, targeting customers seeking luxury jewelry and special occasion pieces.

Everyday or fashion jewelry: This type of jewelry is what you see everywhere in stores and online at low to medium prices. It can be recognized by the following characteristics: often follows fast fashion trends, made from inexpensive or lower-cost materials (beads, wire, plated metal, plastic, synthetic stones, etc.), lower price points, can be mass-produced (and often is), targeting everyday customers.

Designer jewelry by artists: This category includes everything in between. Handmade jewelry requires specialized skills and medium-grade materials. This type of jewelry also features the following qualities: materials range from inexpensive to valuable (fabrics, metals, semi-precious stones, wood, 3D printing, etc.), unique designs (collectible, custom-made, one-of-a-kind), crafted with high artistry, price points vary but are typically medium to high depending on the artist’s popularity or amount of labor involved, targeting customers who are interested in design, collecting, and gifting.

Step 2: Research the Market and Trends

To launch your jewelry brand, it requires an understanding of trends and conducting in-depth market research. Before you start developing your brand and products, it’s important to know your target audience and gather inspiration.

You can achieve this by following fashion and jewelry blogs and keeping up with trending fashion icons and popular TikTok creators in this field to stay updated on seasonal trends. You can also look to other jewelry designers for inspiration.

Additionally, you can leverage available data and statistics. You can use tools like Google Trends to see global search volume for a certain term.

Moreover, you might consider adjacent consumer trends, such as the demand for customizable experiences like engraving. Or you can capitalize on the growing trend of sustainable shopping by using ethically sourced materials.

However, businesses shouldn’t just follow trends – you can also use your jewelry business to start your own trends. That’s what founder Biko and designer Corrine Anestopoulos did, launching her collection based on her personal taste. Corinne states, “I felt like I stumbled upon a new market by accident, but it was my personal taste.” When she started, she was working with copper finishes. She says, “No one else was doing that,” referring to the shiny silver that was trending at the time.

And now,

Although its collections evolve with jewelry industry trends every year, the common thread is the distinctive look that defines its brand and ensures customer repeatability.

Step 3: Define Your Brand

Successful jewelry brands have one thing in common: a strong brand. Remember, branding is different from graphic design. Branding is your voice, your message, your vision, and your brand story. It tells potential customers how they should feel about your products. And purchases in the fashion industry are often emotional, with emerging brands winning customers by connecting on a personal level, even through something as simple as the business name.

Tell your brand story and find your voice

The principles of branding will guide everything you do as a brand. This essential document will capture everything from voice and style to messaging and values. It will be helpful in maintaining consistency in your communications even as you scale your business.

Best practices for jewelry brands:

  • Understand your audience. How do they talk? What tone and terminology will resonate with their feelings?
  • Define your brand voice and style.
  • Tell your story through an “About Us” page.
  • Share yourself in social media posts by showcasing your process and inspiring your designs.

Packaging, logo, and brand identity

Packaging refers to the tactical elements that visually represent your brand: logo, packaging, business cards, and your website.

Once you have defined the aesthetics for your products, chosen a business name that caters to your audience, and achieved alignment with your customer profile, crafting an overview to define your brand should be straightforward. This is a crucial step, even for a small company, so don’t rush it.

Brand design tasks to complete as a beginner jewelry business owner:

  • Define fonts, colors, and visual aesthetics.
  • Develop the logo yourself using a free online logo maker or hire a professional.
  • Create a library of brand assets, including multiple versions of the logo and other design elements that will appear on your packaging, social media, and website.
  • Choose a memorable domain name to help your customers find your website and remember it.
  • Design creative product packaging and shipping materials that align with your brand.

For larger budgets, you can work with a designer to translate your vision into a comprehensive brand design package for your business – from logo and website to packaging and marketing materials. Check out the portfolios of Shopify design experts to find a designer whose style suits your taste.

Tip: Remember, you will also need to reserve part of your budget for professional product photography. We will discuss the importance of jewelry photography later in this post.

Step 4: Produce (or Source) Your Jewelry Products

How you develop your products – by hand or in a factory, at home or elsewhere – depends on the design complexity, price point, required materials, and skill level needed. In this section, we will discuss how to start a jewelry business through five methods of production and sourcing:

1. Handmade Jewelry Production: Luxurious and Unique

Creating luxurious and unique jewelry can be one of the most complex, distinctive, and varied methods of production. Some luxury and unique jewelry production techniques require specialized training/certification and costly equipment. You may need to learn some of these techniques, including:

  • Welding
  • Precious and gold metal crafting
  • Casting
  • 3D printing
  • Laser cutting
  • Leatherworking
  • Weaving
  • Stone setting

Tip: You might start with free online lessons to learn jewelry making. You can then upgrade to paid lessons or train under an experienced artisan to expand your skill set.

2.

Handmade Jewelry Production: Trendy and Ordinary

Making trendy handmade jewelry often involves assembling pre-existing elements – chains, wires, beads, cast pendants, etc. – and does not require specialized training or equipment beyond basic hand tools.

This type of business can be easily scaled, as you can purchase items in bulk and create templates for assembly by an outsourced production team.

If design and production are the elements that bring you joy in your work and not the actual task of making jewelry, you can hire or provide other roles to help expand the creative business.

Biko Corrine reaches out to local universities that have popular fashion communication programs to find her interns. She says, “I’m not looking for anyone interested in design,” adding, “What I need is someone to help free up my time so that I can design more.”

3. Jewelry Production: Outsourcing Production to Factories

Instead of making jewelry by hand, you can have your designs made by someone else. This is not ideal for luxury or custom-made or handmade jewelry, but it can be cost-effective for trendy pieces produced in larger quantities. There are two main options for outsourcing production to a jewelry factory: domestic and overseas.

Domestic manufacturing has the benefits of attracting local customers and the possibility of building relationships and monitoring production easily. Disadvantages may include higher costs, limited choices, and production volume restrictions.

Overseas manufacturing can be a good solution if you want to reduce costs (for those doing large quantities) and have more options regarding factories. You may face challenges in communication and oversight and issues with execution due to supply chain delays.

Precise illustrations or 3D models of your designs are essential if you intend to outsource production to a factory. There are many options, depending on your skill level and budget:

  • Hand-drawing design tools: pens, sketch paper, jewelry design templates ($)
  • General 2D or 3D design software: Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp ($$)
  • Jewelry-specific design software (best for luxury jewelry): RhinoGold, MatrixGold ($$$)

4. Jewelry Production: Print on Demand

The most indirect way of producing involves uploading your designs to a print on demand app. Your original designs are 3D printed or recreated by a 3D printer in stainless steel, wood, plastic, gold, or silver and shipped directly to your customers.

The Shopify App Store has several companies that can turn your designs into a variety of products, from mugs to t-shirts and jewelry.

5. Jewelry Selection: Dropshipping and Reselling

If you’re not creative but have a passion for jewelry, consider reselling jewelry from other designers in your own online store. You can hold inventory and ship it yourself or choose a jewelry dropshipping model.

With the jewelry dropshipping model, there’s no need to hold any inventory. You can sell products through your online jewelry store, and orders will be shipped directly to your customers by the vendor.

Step 5: Setting Up a Studio or Workspace for Your Jewelry Business

If you decide to make jewelry yourself, you’ll need a space to work and for your team. When setting up this space, you should consider the following points:

  • Ease of movement. Consider the flow of the space, especially if the assembly process involves multiple steps – do you move logically from station to station?
  • Safety. Some chemicals or tools used in jewelry making require proper ventilation and safety precautions. Check local laws regarding the use of these materials and processes.
  • Storage. Organized and multi-compartment storage is essential for small parts.

Says
Gillian Johnson, founder of the Hawkly jewelry brand: “The jeweler’s bench, the flexible motor, and your safety will be the most important considerations.” She adds: “The flexible motor is a fantastic, versatile tool you can use for drilling, finishing, and polishing your pieces.” She also recommends using a mask and protective eyewear, and for those with long hair, to tie it back so it doesn’t get caught in the tools.

If your production team is larger or your requirements are a bit more complex – such as workshops for metal or silver working – consider acquiring a commercial space outside the home. If that’s outside your budget to begin with, explore co-working studio space or share the costs of space and equipment with other artists. Gillian shares her studio with two other businesses.

Sharing space also helps combat the loneliness of the entrepreneurial spirit, something that Corrine knows well. “After working full-time at Biko for a while, I ended up working at a retail clothing store once a week just so I wouldn’t feel lonely at home in my studio.”

Step 6: Jewelry Design and Tools

There are many online resources for learning jewelry making, including wholesale jewelry-making supplies and tools, along with precious gemstones and raw metals.

Gillian relies heavily on word of mouth when it comes to her wholesale suppliers. “Don’t be afraid to ask other designers about their sources,” she says. She also attends trade shows and industry events to expand her network and discover new materials. “The best place to find the latest stones and silver materials is the Tucson Gem and Jewelry Show,” Gillian says. “There are thousands of vendors from around the world.”

Step 7: Take Professional Photos of Your Products

Product photography can make or break your online store. This is true in many industries but is especially important for fashion brands.

In many cases, you can achieve great DIY photos of your products even with your smartphone using a very simple lighting setup. However, jewelry can be a bit more challenging due to small details and reflective surfaces.

Corinne Anestopoulos says: “Don’t skimp on photography.” Even if you’re working with a limited budget, a professional photographer has the expertise in making models feel comfortable and setting up complex lighting.

Your photography team can also include styling experts, makeup artists, and assistants.

“Don’t skimp on photography.” Corinne Anestopoulos

Hiring models doesn’t have to be costly. “There are always people looking to build their portfolio or willing to work for product,” she says. “It’s not about taking advantage of people – you’re all new to the game. If you put a group together and collaborate, you can create magic together.”

When shooting, it’s also important to provide several viewpoints and angles of your products within these two categories:
