Are there real jobs for assembling products at home?

Are there real jobs for assembling products at home? If you are considering a position that pays you to build things, most “jobs” you will find online are not real jobs. Instead, you can purchase a startup kit that will set you up to assemble products, or you may be charged for the materials that you can turn into products for sale. Either way, you will not make money assembling products at home. Do not waste your money on purchasing a kit or anything else to get started; the job offer is most likely a scam.

Avoid Scams for Assembling Products at Home

Legitimate companies pay you to work for them, not the other way around. It is not cost-effective for manufacturers to pay people to work on a piece rate. Most of the goods you will see when checking for work-from-home assembly jobs are produced in factories overseas where costs can be reduced.

If you are not convinced that the job is a scam and think you might have come across a legitimate opportunity, take a few minutes to verify it: search for the company name on Google, then add “reviews” or “scam” and search again. It will only take a few seconds to find information about the company if it is not legitimate. Check sites like “Scam Report” and “Better Business Bureau” to see if there are any complaints.

Note: If you read negative reviews, that’s a good indicator to avoid the offer.

Another red flag, besides requesting money, is when you are asked to provide confidential information such as your social security number or driver’s license number. If you are asked for banking or credit card information, or to send money, these are also warning signs. Here’s more information on how to know if a job is a scam.

How to Make Money Through Product Assembly Work

Although what you were thinking about when you started looking for work-from-home assembly jobs might not exist, there are other ways to make money through assembling things. This especially applies if you are creative or have crafting skills.

If you are creative and skilled and have the determination to succeed, there are ways to make money selling jewelry, arts and crafts, and other products that you have made online.

Another option is to work for a company that assembles products for customers. You won’t work from home, but you will have flexibility, and if you enjoy building things, this is a way to get paid for doing it.

Types of Real Product Assembly Jobs

If you love assembling things, there are jobs available for assembling items like exercise machines, bicycles, grills, furniture, sports equipment, computers, and anything else people can imagine but don’t want to build or assemble themselves.

Product Assembly Jobs in Retail

You can work at a large store like Walmart or Home Depot that offers assembly services, for example, or sign up to be a home service provider for companies that offer assembly services for the products they sell.

Note: Some companies also hire workers to repair products in addition to building them.

Home Product Assembly Jobs

If you are interested in building things, you can:

  • Sign up for Amazon Home Services
  • List your services on other sites and apps that offer assembly and repair services
  • Post an ad on Craigslist in the services section
  • Respond to inquiries on Nextdoor and mention your availability to everyone

Starting a Small Business

Another option is to work as a freelancer or a small business. If you are interested in crafting, for example, you can set up a shop on sites like Etsy, eBay, ArtFire, or Handmade by Amazon. Depending on what you are making, there are many options for selling your goods on a third-party site, your own blog, or your website.

Includes

Alternatives also include selling goods at craft fairs, flea markets, farmers’ markets, or establishing a relationship with a retail store to showcase your products.

Where to Find Jobs

There are many different sources for finding assembly job listings, but it will take some time and effort to review the job listings. You can search for full-time or part-time positions, and although you may not be able to work from home, you might get some flexibility in your work schedule.

Applying Online

If you are interested in signing up for one of the services or websites mentioned above, you can apply directly online. For example, to sign up for Amazon Home Services, there is a simple form that requires filling out just one page. Please note that in order to apply, you will need a link to a third-party review site where customers can attest to the quality of your work. Etsy also has an online registration page.

Searching Job Listings

Look for job listings on sites like Indeed and other top job sites based on your location, using terms like “product assembly at home,” “assembly,” “assembler,” and “product assembly.” There’s an interesting range of employers looking for both permanent and temporary employees for assembly jobs.

Check local listings on Craigslist and posts from your neighborhood on Nextdoor.

Using an App

You will also find assembly job listings on apps like Handy, TaskRabbit, Thumbtack, Mister Handyman, and Neato (in the crafts and assembly category). With this type of work, whether you’re working for yourself or directly for a client, you will usually need your own tools and means of transportation.
