How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet
Suppose you don’t know where your resume has been posted. Your first goal is to locate copies of your resume that are visible to your professional contacts.
How to Find Your Resume
Search on Google using your name and the word “resume” to find public copies of your resume.
You can also search more specifically and include some keywords that you know are present in your resume. For example, search on Google using your name, job title, and company name.
Review Your Email Accounts
Another way to check the sites where you’ve posted your resume is to go back through your old emails. You should have received a confirmation email when you created an account on a job site.
You may have also received emails from potential employers. When you find the account you created, you can log in and delete your resume or set it to private so it is not visible to employers.
Check Social Media Sites and Job Search Sites
If your resume is visible, searching on Google and in your inbox should help you find it. But to be completely sure, you can also log in to any professional social media accounts or job search sites you may have used in the past to see if you have an existing resume. If you don’t find any copies of your resume, you are likely in the clear.
Be sure to track all job search activities in the future. A simple list or table is all you need. Include all your usernames and passwords, and do not use the same ones for job sites as you do for your personal login. Better yet, create a new email account to use solely for job searching.
Make Your Resume Private
If you find copies of your resume online, you may be able to hide them without completely deleting them. With some job sites, especially those with a networking component, you might want to leave your resume online but restrict who can view it. Check the privacy settings. You may be able to change the visibility of your resume from public to limited or private.
How to Delete Your Resume
If you decide you want to delete your resume, log in to the sites where you posted it and delete your resume or remove it. If you can’t remember your usernames and passwords, follow the instructions on the page to recover a forgotten username or lost password. It only takes a few minutes to fix.
You will also need to know the email address you used when creating accounts on job sites.
Once you log in to each site, you should be able to find a link to your resume. It should be easy to delete.
If you can’t figure out how to do it, look for a “help” link where you can search for instructions, or a “contact us” page and send a message to the site’s support team who can assist you in deleting your resume.
Update Your Account Information
While you’re searching for your resume, make sure to update your online professional accounts. You never know when you might need them in the future. If you have a LinkedIn profile, update it with your latest employment information.
If you have an online copy of your resume and want to keep the account, make sure all your information is current.
