Zillow’s Predictions for the Six Home Design Trends Set to Become Widespread in 2024

At the end of 2023 (we know, we can’t believe it either), predictions for 2024 trends started to emerge – from paint colors to kitchen fixtures and even foods. To cover what will happen in the home decorating field, Zillow, the leading real estate marketplace, released a list of trends they expect to dominate TikTok and other social media platforms.

1. Brutalism

Zillow has seen a massive increase of 452 percent in the share of real estate listings mentioning this dark architectural style. This style carries a significant contrast, partly because it flourished during a time of social unrest in the mid-20th century, and also because it relies heavily on unattractive materials such as concrete and other unfinished industrial elements. According to Zillow, features inspired by brutalism, such as blackened steel windows, raw concrete floors, and tarnished bronze ceiling lights, are on the rise.

2. Sensory Gardens and Pathways

People love to enjoy beautiful moments in their gardens, but there is one type you may not have heard of that is spreading in people’s homes: sensory gardens. These outdoor spaces are designed to engage the five senses for therapeutic benefits and feature a variety of plants, textures, colors, scents, sounds, and edible elements like herbs or produce. Zillow reports that listings mentioning sensory gardens or pathways have increased by 314 percent compared to last year.

3. Cold Soaking Tubs

We’ve already noticed an increase in demand for small pools over the summer, so it’s not a big surprise that cold soaking tubs are now becoming popular, with listings on Zillow featuring “cold soaking tub at home” increasing by 130 percent compared to last year. This typical health trend is promoted as a way to improve circulation and reduce inflammation, although the science behind it is still being debated. This luxurious feature was previously associated with spas and high-end listings, but DIY versions are making it more accessible.

4. Murano Glass Chandeliers

Murano glass is prized for its craftsmanship and rich history – handmade on the island of Murano in Venice, Italy, dating back to the Renaissance. Delicate crystal has mostly fallen out of favor in the second half of the 20th century, but it’s ready to make a comeback in lighting, according to Zillow. Quirky and colorful chandeliers are now appearing 58 percent more in listings.

5. Pickleball Courts

Technically, the recreational sport combining tennis and ping pong began to gain popularity about two years ago in the summer, but now people want full courts in their homes – or at least want one nearby. Zillow reports pickleball mentions have increased by 64 percent nationwide compared to last year. Joy Kim Metalius, a partner at a top Zillow agency, confirms this trend saying, “I’ve seen homeowners converting their driveways into courts using portable nets. The home court has become the latest entertainment feature, like an outdoor kitchen or pizza oven.”

6. Painted Walls

Wallpaper with repetitive patterns has been popular in design for some time, and now that it has proven not to be the same old-fashioned wall covering you saw in your grandparents’ home, people are starting to experiment with a new type of wall decor: painted walls, which you can paint directly onto a surface or paper. (We love these from Chasing Paper!) Painted walls are appearing 18 percent more in homes listed on Zillow, and perhaps eclectic and maximalist trends are the source of this interest, as homeowners and buyers seek homes with more personality.

Designated Spaces for Working from Home

The “cloffice” (a combination of “closet” and “office”), which gained significant popularity during the pandemic as people tried to carve out small spaces to work from home, has officially been phased out of the spirit of the era. Most people have now returned to the office, and demand for work-from-home areas has decreased. The “cloffice” is now down 54 percent in Zillow listings, Zoom rooms are down 41 percent, and home office sheds are highlighted as being 31 percent lower in advertising descriptions.

Tuscan Kitchens

You might think of Olive Garden when this style is mentioned, but in reality, the hit Netflix series “The White Lotus” is partially responsible for the uptick in this trend on social media, as the latest season was set in Italy. Additionally, the destination design was extremely popular while we were home over the past few years. Now that travel has resumed, the need to bring vacation vibes home has lessened somewhat. Tuscan kitchen memories are down 45 percent from last year, while all things Parisian are down 26 percent.
