Last night, my friend Cath (known for her evening fame) and I were browsing through some old photos of us at parties when we were in our twenties, wearing short dresses and black stockings.
“We didn’t appreciate our looks when we were younger,” she said. “We were too busy complaining.”
(Remember Nora Ephron’s quote? “Oh, how I regret not wearing a bikini for the entire year I was twenty-six.”)
She was right; we didn’t appreciate it back then. But I was also thinking, we don’t appreciate it now! One day we will look back on these days and wish we had valued them.
Humans are beautiful. We have shiny eyes and ears that curve like little seashells. We have elegant fingers, rounded bellies, and legs that carry us. We have tattoos, lipstick, smiles, and wheelchairs. And beauty only deepens with age. To me, the most radiant person in the world is a woman with white hair, wrinkled hands, and watery eyes.
So, I would like to ask: What do you love about your appearance? I love the wrinkles around my eyes. (And if you’d like to send a photo to hello@cupofjo.com, we can even compile them and publish them for readers:)

Although my vision requires heavy contact lenses, I love my light brown eyes with a slight shade. I also love that my top lip is smaller than the other side. And I love my big teeth that show clearly when I smile or laugh. I love my body that still moves, speaks, hears, sees, thinks, and wonders.

I love my eyes; they are a grayish shade with blue and green. My friend said they look strange, and that boosted my confidence.

I have a strange laugh, but I love it because when I hear it, it means I’m happy, and that brings me peace.

This may sound strange to many of you, but I always feel beautiful when my period comes. I didn’t get my period until I was 18 (!) due to a blocked hymen, so I had to have surgery twice to allow waste to exit and start menstruating, and I remember how awful it felt to grow up without a period. I cried deeply because I thought my body was defective. So don’t take things for granted, as some have suffered greatly to get what is supposed to be a normal body.

I love my wide nose on my small face. I used to feel annoyed by it, but now I love it, especially since my beautiful daughter has the same nose. I see it as a kind and attractive feature.

I love my hair… I turned 59 this summer, and earlier this year I decided to stop dyeing my hair. Even my hairstylist encouraged me to do that! Now I have a short silver-gray haircut… and since it hasn’t been dyed in months, it looks thick and healthy… several people have told me it looks so much better than when I dyed it a reddish-brown color, and yesterday I saw someone I hadn’t seen in a year, and she said to me, “Don’t ever go back! It looks amazing!”

I love my ankles. They are my mother’s, grandmother’s, and aunt’s ankles. When I was a child, they were like sticks on a tall body – a bit uncoordinated. Now when I look in the mirror, I remember the lineage of women who came before me, and that’s special to me.

I love my curly hair. For a long time, I hated it and tried to style it straight, but now I’m learning how to care for it in its natural state. I don’t always enjoy its natural look, but I’m making progress and trying to show my three children with curly hair that natural is beautiful.

I love all these beautiful comments. I usually find beauty in family and friends, but this made me think about what I love about myself: I love being tall! I hated that when I was younger, but at 51, I stand tall and walk confidently, and I really enjoy it. I love my curly, wavy, coarse, and wild hair. I lost it a few years ago due to chemotherapy after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and it came back crazier than ever. It’s a bit hard to tame, but it’s my hair! I love my ears, which match my cousin’s and my late grandmother’s ears too. (Mikmak)

You are right! I just thought I’d do anything for the body I had in my twenties and how sad I am that I didn’t feel confident and beautiful at that time… today I love my hair that makes me unique since for many years I hated it and now it’s something special to me…

I love my eyes, my face, my body, and my skin. I love seeing myself in the mirror as I dance or wave to myself. I’ve never felt as beautiful as I do now. Even my friend told me last week that he can feel I’m at peace with myself and that makes me 100% more attractive, and I felt loved and visible.

Thank you for this. I love it. And I love all these comments. They truly inspired me to think about myself and what I love about myself. I love my long, elegant neck, my nearly 6-foot height, which I used to be ashamed of, and always tried to find flat shoes. I love my dark brown skin. I love the wrinkles around my eyes, and I love my symmetrical ears that match my cousin’s and my late grandmother’s ears too.

I love that. And I love connecting with what people love about themselves. I always felt self-conscious about my mouth and teeth because they are relatively big, until a friend told me a few years ago how he envies me for having a “Julia Roberts smile.” That was an inspiring moment, and perhaps the best (physical) compliment I could hope for. Now every time I feel self-conscious, I try to think about how someone else might see the flaws I see in myself as something beautiful.

I love my curvy and imperfect body at 60, and my red hair! I completely agree with this comment: “For me, the most radiant person in the world is a woman with white hair, curly hands, and watery eyes.”

I love the shape of my teeth and my nails. I have been lucky in that regard. I think what really helped me solidify a positive body image is long-distance running. Even though I have a body that is not flat and thighs and legs with cellulite, I know my body is capable of running a marathon easily, and I find that beautiful. It’s truly amazing what the human body can do, and I am grateful for the things my body allows me to do because I know not everyone is that fortunate.

I love my bright eyes, my full lips, and my hair. I used to hate the color of my hair, but my hairdresser described it beautifully and changed my mind: “It’s like a copper coin and a blonde had a child.” I love how my nose crinkles when I smile widely, and I work (and mostly succeed!) on loving all the things I used to hate when I was younger and less confident – my small breasts, my big nose, my pear-shaped hips, and my thigh and leg dilemma. And even more, I love the deep confidence and gratitude that accompanied my forties, making me feel radiant and beautiful.

I love
