Expectations

The Ceremony

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be the first major broadcast of the awards season and will air on CBS, with the host yet to be announced. While it may seem similar to the audience, the past few years have been challenging behind the scenes following a 2021 Los Angeles Times report that revealed ethical violations such as its members accepting lavish gifts and travel from award promoters and studios.

For a long time, the Golden Globe Awards have been one of the highlights of the awards season, ranking second only to the Oscars. Before the pandemic, it still attracted around 19 million viewers. The show was known for being a party event attended by celebrities, with presenters often adopting a more casual tone than their Academy counterparts. It also honors the most glamorous categories of the film industry – picture, director, and actors among them – meaning no long speeches from animation supervisors or directors of obscure short films.

In some years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association came under fire for nominating films that received negative reviews with the hopes that big-name stars would attend the ceremony, the most infamous of these films being “The Tourist” starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. In the past decade, the nominated films have largely overlapped with the Oscars.

This year, NBC’s Tuesday night episode received the smallest audience ever for a traditional broadcast, with 6.3 million viewers.
