The Philippines summoned the Chinese ambassador, according to the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs on Monday (December 11) amid escalating tensions between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the disputed South China Sea. At the same time, the United States accused China of interfering in Philippine maritime operations and undermining regional stability.
Summoning the Chinese Ambassador
Philippine Foreign Affairs spokesperson Teresita Daza announced during a press conference that Manila had lodged diplomatic protests and “the Chinese ambassador was summoned” amid escalating tensions in the disputed South China Sea.
Serious Escalation
Daza stated that the declaration of Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian as a “person non grata” in the Philippines is an issue that “must be taken seriously.” Meanwhile, Jonathan Malaya, the Assistant Secretary General of the National Security Council in the Philippines, told reporters that the incident over the weekend was a “serious escalation” of Beijing’s tactics to assert its claim over the South China Sea.
China’s Response
In response to the allegations made by the Philippines, China issued a statement on Monday (December 11) describing its actions as “professional” and “restrained.” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the Chinese Coast Guard “took necessary measures against Philippine vessels according to local and international law.” She added, “The operations were professional, restrained, reasonable, and legal.” China also confirmed that it had lodged “strong protests” with the Philippines and expressed its strong objections.
China also urged Manila to immediately stop its violations, control its provocative actions, and “refrain from shooting itself in the foot,” according to a commentary article in the official Chinese military newspaper, as reported by Reuters. The People’s Daily stated that “some hegemonic countries” have resorted to “creating problems, causing divisions, and inciting clashes” in the South China Sea, and those countries have “openly supported” illegal encroachments and provocations by the Philippines.
In response to the weekend incident, the Chinese Coast Guard stated that it would continue its “executive activities” in its waters.
