Non-Fossil Fuel Share Accounts for 44% of Power Generation Capacity in India – Energy Minister

On December 5, 2023, at 11:12 AM UTC, India’s Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, reported that non-fossil fuel sources constituted about 44% of India’s power generation capacity by the end of October. This was reported by Reuters.

India’s Goal to Increase Non-Fossil Fuel Share

India, the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, aims to increase the share of non-fossil fuel sources in electricity generation capacity to 50% by 2030. These sources include solar, wind, nuclear, hydrocarbon, and biomass energy.

Current and Future Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity

The minister confirmed in his statement that India has installed a generation capacity of 186.46 GW from non-fossil fuel sources as of October 31, 2023. There is also 114.08 GW of capacity under construction and 55.13 GW in the bidding process.

India’s Use of Funds Allocated for Renewable Energy

Data shared by the minister showed that India has utilized about 50% of the funds allocated for the development and deployment of renewable energy in the first ten months of the year.

Coal and Renewable Energy in India

Although coal remains the primary source of electricity in India, accounting for more than half of power generation capacity, the rate of addition of renewable energy capacity in India is second only to China among major Asia-Pacific countries.

India’s Support for Renewable Energy at COP28 Climate Summit

At the ongoing COP28 climate summit, India also expressed its support for doubling renewable energy by 2030, but it did not endorse the general commitment made by about 118 governments, which links this escalation in clean energy to a reduction in fossil fuel use.
