Death of Karen Kaplan (1959-2023)
We at Nature mourn the passing of our colleague Karen Kaplan on November 26, due to head and neck cancer that was diagnosed two years ago.
Karen, who was based in Washington, D.C., joined the editorial team in the jobs section of Nature in 2008, coming from the U.S. where she worked at Physics Today. In her role as senior editor for jobs, she oversaw the weekly articles in the section in addition to commissioning regular columns and Q&A sessions from our global audience of postdoctoral researchers. Karen also led our annual surveys of scientists’ work, and in 2019 she was the lead editor for the photo series “Where I Work” presented in celebration of Nature’s 150th anniversary.
Karen’s colleagues and her wide network of detail-oriented writers and active editors advocated for diversity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine – ensuring that coverage of voices from underrepresented groups and workplace issues were regularly and consistently featured in Nature’s jobs section.
Karen was a former commercial journalist, starting her career in 1987 at The Day newspaper in Connecticut. She loved language, food, fashion, jazz, and blues music. Our thoughts are with Karen’s friends and family, especially her sister A.B., during this difficult time.
