In the early hours of fighting after the collapse of a week-long truce on Friday, the Gaza Health Ministry said that Israeli bombardment of homes and buildings resulted in the deaths of at least 178 people across the Gaza Strip.
The Truce and Israeli Bombardment
Israel stated that it had struck more than 200 targets belonging to Hamas. Militants in Gaza resumed firing rockets at Israel, and clashes broke out between Israel and Hezbollah fighters operating on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon.
Efforts to Renew the Truce
Qatar, the truce mediator, said that efforts are ongoing to renew the truce that saw a halt to most military activity in Gaza by Israel in exchange for the release of 300 Palestinian prisoners in return for the release of more than 100 hostages held in Gaza.
The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
After weeks of Israeli bombardment and the ground campaign, more than three-quarters of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million are homeless, leading to a humanitarian crisis where they are facing widespread shortages of food, water, and other supplies. Palestinian authorities reported that no aid trucks entered Gaza from Egypt on Friday.

The Dead and Captives
As of the start of the truce, more than 13,300 Palestinians have been killed, about two-thirds of whom are women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which is governed by Hamas. The number is likely much higher. Approximately 1,200 Israelis have been killed, primarily during the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 that triggered the war.
