Today at Shopify Unite, we announced one of our biggest updates yet: Online Store 2.0.
1. Enhanced Template Architecture
We have upgraded the template architecture for the online store, providing easier and more flexible customization options for merchants. There are also new opportunities for developers to build templates and integrations that can be easily customized by the merchant to fit their needs. A section on every page
2. Flexible Store Content
With Online Store 2.0, developers no longer need to include metafields in templates or rely on APIs to make changes to product pages. Template developers can now use dynamic sources to include standard metafields and known resource properties as default settings.
3. Improvements to the Template Editor
To enable merchants to take advantage of these enhancements and updates, and to ease developer navigation, we have also made significant improvements to the template editor. Instead of needing to navigate to different sections, the editor now displays a tree view of all the content on the page in the sidebar. Merchants can hide most blocks, except for the header and footer. These changes allow merchants to easily update the page sequence.
4. New Developer Tools
Online Store 2.0 introduces a completely new way for developers to build apps and templates for Shopify merchants. To support this change, we are introducing a set of new developer tools that seamlessly integrate into Shopify and assist in the development, testing, and deployment of your templates.
5. New Reference Template
In conjunction with the launch of Online Store 2.0, we are also launching a new reference template that combines all the features mentioned above. We call it Dawn. Dawn is the first open-source reference template from Shopify with the flexibility of OS 2.0 and a focus on speed. It is built in a semantic format using HTML and CSS, rather than relying on external modifications and libraries, to create great experiences across all browsers. It is designed to maximize flexibility while minimizing complexity, striking a balance between design direction and empowering merchants to make the changes they see fit for their businesses.
6. Reopening the Shopify Template Store
We are excited to announce the reopening of the Shopify Template Store for partners on July 15, 2021. On that day, you will be able to submit your new templates for review, and approved templates will start being published from that date.
7. Update Your Templates and Apps
To fully take advantage of these enhancements, you should plan to migrate your templates and apps to the updated Online Store 2.0 requirements as soon as possible. By the end of the year, it will be essential for all templates in the Shopify Template Store and apps in the Shopify App Store to use the new infrastructure. Current merchant templates will continue to work after this year, but to access the new features of Online Store 2.0 through the template editor, merchants will need to ensure that their template is compatible with Online Store 2.0.
