How to Write Blog Posts That Generate Internal Links

Internal links are something that marketers greatly desire. However, they are often harder and more time-consuming for the marketer who needs to create them. I will guide you through five different types of content you can create that will help you generate internal links. The most important thing is to create content for the reader, not for search engines.

Educational Content

I love educational content. This entire blog you are reading now is educational content and has generated 24 links in just six months. Educational content can be described as content that teaches people something or helps them answer one of their questions. Articles tend to be short and contain key points or downloadable resources.

Newsworthy Content

Content related to recent news in your industry or general news can generate internal links. Think of all the people looking for information about a news story or industry topic that is relevant to your business. Write some blog posts about the story, aiming to rank high in search results. Mention in the articles that anyone can use the article as a reference. In return, ask them to link to your article.

Infographics

Infographics are very popular these days. People not only love sharing infographics, but they also enjoy embedding them in their blogs and writing their own opinions about the infographic. We include and link to many different infographics in the HubSpot blog. They take more time to create, but with the right topic and effective promotion strategy, they can generate some serious links.

Trends

Writing articles about industry trends will educate and provide value to your readers. Try to include data in this type of content as people may reference that data in the article. Creating an infographic along with a trend article will have a great impact. These articles tend to get more links because people will refer to the data in the article, helping to support the article and provide more value than just opinion.

Videos

Don’t you love watching videos online? Everyone does, and it’s one of the types of content that gets linked to frequently. Your videos should be a mix of educational, informative, and entertaining content. HubSpot’s research on blogging found that videos embedded in blog articles receive more internal links than images.

Making Content Noteworthy

Press releases are a great way to make the types of content mentioned above noteworthy. Most press releases will generate internal links as they are distributed. Writing guest articles on other blogs is another great way to make content noteworthy and increase links.

HubSpot Tip:

Under the analytics tab in HubSpot, go to blog analytics and click on the “Internal Links” column to sort your internal links. Look at the articles generating internal links and use that information to write similar articles.
