How to Be Creative with Artificial Intelligence Without Delegating the Fun Part

Introduction

When collaborating with others, you may encounter some obstacles such as coordinating schedules, agreeing on goals, and negotiating conflicting viewpoints to reach common ground. However, when collaborating with a machine, the process can become more ambiguous.

Using Artificial Intelligence in Writing

Stephen Marsh describes in his article in The Atlantic how he produced the story “Death of the Author” through experimentation with different prompting techniques using a combination of ChatGPT, Cohere, and Sudowrite. He began with instructions to write in the style of various authors and publications. Then he changed tools to rephrase the original text and continued editing until each section looked as he wanted.

From Skeptic to Advocate

Marsh was an early user of AI as a writing assistant, but he wasn’t immediately convinced of its potential. In fact, his first piece on the topic in 2012 criticized Google’s efforts to turn literature into data.

Collaboration Between Humans and Artificial Intelligence

Marsh believes that a nightmarish world is one where machines write novels and humans drive taxis. He considers this artificial intelligence a creative tool like Photoshop or CGI. In language, what it does well is produce the standard form of something. If you’re looking for a recommendation letter, there’s nothing better than ChatGPT. But it’s not an original mind. Its intelligence is of a combinatorial nature.

Future Expectations

Marsh expects that the appreciation for original thought will grow in the future. Just as with painting, when photography emerged, the ability to replicate a human face suddenly lost its value because the machine could do that. However, the ability to create an interesting artwork does not diminish because of that. In fact, now you need to be bolder in it. And I think that’s something that can really happen with this technology. That is my hope. I live in hope for that.

Collaboration Between Humans and Artificial Intelligence

Marsh believes that collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence is key to obtaining truly valuable material. This collaboration is akin to using Photoshop or CGI in creativity. In language, what it does well is produce the standard form of something. So if you’re looking for a recommendation letter, there’s nothing better than ChatGPT. But it’s not an original mind. Its intelligence is of a combinatorial nature.

AI Art

Marsh sees artificial intelligence as a new artistic form. It is a set of linguistic tricks that lead to a new form of expression. The people who understand this will be those who create actual significant works.

Verifying Ideas

Marsh believes that ideas coming from a non-human perspective should be verified by comparing them with the opinions of real people. If you ask the machine, “What should I do there?”, it will be very good at that. But the next step is to verify that through a real person. Don’t think of it as being self-evident – you have to verify it. Marsh believes that collaboration between humans and AI is the key to obtaining truly valuable material.

Possible Future

Marsh is excited about using artificial intelligence in the future. He is currently working with the Cohere team to create an infinite story. It’s the same story, but due to prompts training, it generates a different version of the story every time you open it. It has a perfect hermeneutic system where if you ask it to write something in the style of the 18th century, it will never use a word that comes later. Why? No one knows! That alone is an extremely interesting question.

He wants

Marche is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to fill in the gaps in some incomplete or broken manuscripts from literary history, especially the “Epic of Gilgamesh.” He has also attempted to use it to recreate a version of the Temple of Delphi. There is much to be done with artificial intelligence concerning language, which is very exciting for anyone interested in linguistics.
