What are you planning to do this weekend? We will be attending some Christmas parties, and I’m also reading the book “Forgiveness” and loving it. The writing is so alive and sharp, reading it almost feels like watching TV. I hope you have a happy weekend, and here are some links from around the web…

The number one gift on my wishlist is this exploration set.

A Post for Online Publishing, or Really, Just Doing Anything in Life

“If you’re confused about the right step to take, just ask yourself: What is the generous thing to do here? Then do it, and enjoy aligning with your higher values.”

I love the shape of these shoes.

Do you say “tennis shoes,” “sneakers,” or “sport shoes”?

(I grew up in Michigan, we used to say tennis shoes, even though we never played tennis.)

Three Reader Comments:

Emily says about the holiday vouchers your kids will love: “My two-year-old son would love a ‘Choose Mommy’s Outfit’ day! He was melting down this morning about having to get dressed, and he could have picked my shirt right away and calmed down immediately.” Katie responds: “I support this! When my daughter was a toddler, she loved to come into my closet when I was getting dressed, so I told her one day she could dress me from head to toe and we would go to a local café for a treat. We called it ‘Fancy Friday,’ and it became one of our favorite things. Not every January in Michigan can you wear a little hat and faux fur cuffs to get coffee.”

Claire says about nine reader comments on kindness: “When I was 32 weeks pregnant, I learned my husband’s cancer meant he wouldn’t live to see our son. My doctor requested an extra ultrasound so the technician could get some pictures of our baby’s face for my husband before he passed. When I arrived at the clinic, there must have been someone who informed them because everyone was so kind to me. The receptionist told me he had rearranged their schedule so that one of their best technicians could do my ultrasound. The technician spent much more time with me than necessary, taking as many pictures of our baby from every angle as possible. When I returned to the waiting room, the staff gave me a rose and a balloon, and a real Father’s Day card – which is the thing that really brings a tear to the eye – for my husband. Looking at those pictures is one of the few bright memories I have with my husband in the last weeks of his life. I will never forget all that kindness.”

Kirby says about nine reader comments on kindness: “My story is a little different, it’s about showing kindness. This year, I changed my career from executive management to being a desk person in a small public library. I was somewhat broken at that time, and this job saved me. On my first morning, my boss said to me, ‘There’s one rule here, be kind.’ Every day, I get a modest paycheck to smile, give stickers to kids, read or sing to them, get to know the grown-ups – I know their kids, what parts of their bodies hurt, and whether the local pool is closed or not. I help reset passwords and print documents and shelve books. One day, an elderly man burst into the library. He had failed at life and was at the end of his rope. Nothing was working on the computer for him. I was able to say to him, “Come with me, we can solve this together.” By the end of the hour, he was laughing, promising that if he saw me with my child, he’d tell him that I was a technical genius! For me, the act of kindness connects me to the world; it makes me feel empowered and better. Kindness works its magic both ways.”
