“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” Shine in Golden Globe Nominations

The Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday morning, continuing the dominance of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” this year, with “Barbie” receiving nine nominations – making it tie for second place among the most nominated films of all time – while “Oppenheimer” received eight nominations.

Key Facts

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” garnered the most nominations this year, including Best Motion Picture, three nominations for Best Original Song, Margot Robbie for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy, and Ryan Gosling for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” received nominations in major categories including Best Director, Best Dramatic Film, and Best Screenplay.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Poor Things” each received seven nominations, including Best Director and Best Screenplay.

On the television front, the series “Succession” achieved nine nominations, including three nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Drama, three nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Television Series, and a nomination for Best Television Drama Series.

The series “Only Murders In The Building” received five nominations, including a nomination for Best Performance in a Musical or Comedy Series for Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin, as well as a nomination for Best Musical or Comedy Series.

Interesting Fact

This year’s awards include new categories for Best Cinematic and Commercial Achievement – available for films that gross more than $150 million, with at least $100 million of that coming from the U.S. box office, or that have “proportional digital viewership recognized by reputable industry sources,” according to a Hollywood Reporter report – and Best Performance in Television Comedy. Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” received nominations in the cinematic achievement category.

Expected nominees Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, and Wanda Sykes all received nominations in the television comedy category, while John Mulaney did not receive a nomination in this category in its inaugural year.

Main Background

The Golden Globes aims to make a strong return with its 2024 ceremony after returning to the air in 2023 following a year-long hiatus. The ceremony has faced several scandals in recent years after facing criticism in 2021 for the lack of Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – its voting body – and losing its deal with NBC. A report from the Los Angeles Times detailed the membership of the association and questionable financial practices, including smear campaigns and threats from members against journalists seeking to join. The ceremony was not broadcast in 2022 and returned in 2023 through a one-year deal with NBC. Last month, the Golden Globes announced it will now air on CBS. The Golden Globes are also no longer under the oversight of the association, and the awards are now determined by a new group of voters consisting of 300 journalists representing 76 countries, as announced by Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globe organization, on Monday morning.

What to Watch For

The 2024 Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday, January 7, from 8 PM to 11 PM Eastern Time on CBS and Paramount+. The host has not yet been announced.
