Tesla recalls 2 million vehicles to fix self-driving software.

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is recalling more than two million vehicles in the United States due to risks associated with its autopilot programming, according to an announcement made by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday.

Tesla Vehicle Recall

The NHTSA has announced that Tesla has now submitted a recall to the agency related to its autopilot programming system, adding that “the affected vehicles will receive a software update over the air.” The recall affects 2.03 million Tesla vehicles, across all models.

Autopilot Programming Issue

According to a statement sent by the agency to the AFP, Tesla’s autopilot system “may provide insufficient driver interaction and usage controls that could lead to an expected misuse of the system.” The agency noted that if the autopilot programming is used incorrectly or if the driver fails to recognize the activation of the feature, the risk of a crash may increase, according to NHTSA.

Over-the-Air Software Update

The vehicles will receive a software update over the air, and the update will include additional alerts to encourage drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel.

Investigations and Lawsuits

Tesla, based in the United States, has faced several lawsuits following car accidents, and its driver-assist technology is prompting regulatory investigations.

In 2021, NHTSA opened an investigation into 11 incidents involving Tesla vehicles and stationary emergency vehicles using the driver-assist feature.

Additionally, Tesla has reduced prices on its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the United States, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has asked Tesla CEO Elon Musk to open Tesla’s seventh factory in Turkey.

Regarding the current recall, Tesla is working to fix the autopilot programming to enhance driver safety and reduce the risk of potential accidents.
