When Christian Nasr wandered through Bowery Street in New York in 2014, she became fascinated by the exceptional and industrial atmosphere of the neighborhood. Nasr fell in love with the furniture and lighting stores on Bowery Street and noticed a gap in the market in Dubai for this type of design experience. After returning to the UAE, she decided to create a company that sells selected furniture and interior design that combines the industrial vibe of New York with clean Scandinavian lines. What began as an online store for consumers eventually became a 5,000 square foot store in the Al Quoz area of Dubai. With plans to open a store in Saudi Arabia in 2024, Arab News speaks with the entrepreneur to learn more.
Company Vision
Bowery is considered a pioneer in Scandinavian furniture design in the region, as well as being the largest supplier of this design style. The store features brands such as 101 Copenhagen, Ferm Living, Fest Amsterdam, Norr11, and Audo Copenhagen. Nasr is heavily involved in the curation and is fully engaged in the purchasing decisions for the collection. “I choose the fabrics and color schemes. You can’t have completely different brands – you need something that blends when you have multiple brands,” she stated.
Expansion in Saudi Arabia
Over the years, Bowery has also gained a reputation in hotels and commercial spaces. Recently, they have worked on several projects in Saudi Arabia, including Red Sea hotels and NEOM. Nasr adds that future expansion plans in the Kingdom are on track and that she already has a partner in Saudi Arabia on the commercial side. “Additionally, I have also found a location for a new store in the Kingdom, which we are looking at for 2024. The trademark has been registered, and I am working on finalizing the licensing, which is an impressive achievement,” she said.
