Michigan School Killer Sentenced to Life in Prison

Ethan Crumbley, the Oxford High School shooter in Michigan in 2021, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Friday. Crumbley was convicted after pleading guilty to 24 charges, including murder and terrorism. Judge Kwame Row sentenced Crumbley to life in prison during a hearing on Friday that featured hours of victim testimony. Judge Row described Crumbley’s actions as a “real act of terrorism,” deciding that his mental health issues did not prevent him from planning and carrying out the attack. In a courtroom statement, Crumbley acknowledged responsibility for the attack and asked Judge Row to impose any sentence they sought against him. Crumbley, who is 17 years old, was charged as an adult immediately after the shooting, despite being 15 years old at the time of the incident. In October, Crumbley pleaded guilty to all charges against him, including murder, terrorism, assault, and weapon possession. In a hearing in September, Judge Row determined that Crumbley was eligible for the maximum sentence in Michigan, which is life in prison without the possibility of parole. Victims’ families confronted Crumbley directly, including Molly Darnell, the teacher who was injured in the attack. She said, “You intended to leave my husband a widower and my children orphans, there is no forgiveness for you.” Kylie Osij, a student who was shot in the collarbone, recalled her struggle to survive for 15 minutes before help arrived and listening to the final moments of Hana St. Juliana: “Hana left me in our complete solitude.”

Main Background

The deadly attack took place at Oxford High School in Michigan on November 30, 2021. Earlier that same day, Crumbley’s parents were called to the school after a teacher discovered him drawing a violent picture of a shooting. Crumbley had included a caption on the drawing that read “the thoughts won’t stop.” Crumbley’s parents refused to take him home but agreed to get him mental health counseling within 48 hours. Around 12:50 PM, Crumbley retrieved a 9mm handgun from his backpack inside a bathroom. He opened fire in the hallway, killing four students – Madison Baldwin, Justin Shilling, Tate Myre, and Hana St. Juliana – and injuring seven others – six students and one teacher.

What to Follow

Charges of involuntary manslaughter were filed against Crumbley’s parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, days after the deadly attack. Prosecutors alleged that the parents failed to secure mental health treatment for their son after receiving warnings from school officials. They also said that both parents purchased a handgun for their son days before the attack. The couple failed to appear for their preliminary hearing, prompting a two-day search led by U.S. Marshals. James and Jennifer pleaded not guilty, and their trial is scheduled to begin on January 23. The Detroit Free Press reported that both parents were barred from attending their son’s sentencing.

Key Quote

Jill Sow, the mother of victim Justin Shilling, spoke about her son and told Crumbley he would have been his friend. She said, “If you were alone, and gloomy, and really lost, and you desperately needed a friend, Justin would have been your friend – if you had just asked him.”
