Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Activists’ Concerns About the Spread of Diseases and Hunger

Israel continues to bomb Gaza on Tuesday amid relief leaders’ fears that the besieged territories may soon be threatened by disease and hunger, while diplomatic pressure on Israel is increasing to enhance efforts to protect civilians.

Violent fighting continues

The violent fighting continued on Tuesday, with Hamas stating that clashes took place in central Gaza, and witnesses reported deadly Israeli strikes in the southern territories.

Israeli strikes on Gaza

The strikes on Monday targeted the main southern city of Khan Younis in Gaza, which has now become a center of fighting, as well as Rafah, a city on the border with Egypt where tens of thousands of people are seeking shelter.

Humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza

Israel continues its military campaign that has led to the destruction of a large part of Gaza and the killing of at least 18,200 people, mostly women and children, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The United Nations estimates that 1.9 million of the territories’ 2.4 million residents have been displaced due to the Israeli war, half of them being children.

Lack of basic supplies

Civilians in Gaza face a catastrophic situation, according to European diplomat Josep Borrell, who compared the destruction of the territories to that suffered by Germany during World War II.

Health services are experiencing widespread devastation, with only 14 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza operating at capacity, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Poor health conditions

In central Gaza, Al-Aqsa Hospital was overwhelmed with casualties on Monday, including many children screaming, following Israeli strikes on the Al-Maghazi refugee camp.

With basic supplies running out and health conditions deteriorating, women and girls in Rafah reported that they have been forced to use scattered cloth pieces for menstruation.

Limited international aid

International aid organizations are struggling to deliver aid to the despairing residents of Gaza under Israeli bombardment, as the Rafah crossing in Egypt remains the only open access point.

Under increasing pressure to do more for civilians, Israel announced on Monday that it would inspect aid heading to Gaza at two additional checkpoints, allowing more aid to enter the devastated territories.

No direct new crossings will be opened, but the Nitzana and Kerem Shalom crossings will be used for inspections before sending trucks through Rafah.
