Everything About Amanda Bynes’ Parents, Lynn and Rick Bynes

Amanda Bynes was born to her mother Lynn and father Rick in 1986. Amanda Bynes grew up in the spotlight, often appearing with her parents Lynn and Rick Bynes.

Lynn and Rick’s Upbringing of Amanda in Southern California

Lynn and Rick married in 1967 and had their older children, Tom and Jillian. After Amanda was born in 1986, they raised their family in Ventura County, California.

While their children were growing up, they tried to keep Amanda’s home life separate from her professional life in Hollywood. In interviews, they did not disclose much information about where they lived or where their daughter studied.

Rick also considered it important to keep Amanda in Southern California, even when she had opportunities to work elsewhere. As a teenager, a job was offered to her that would take her to Florida for five months a year, but Rick said he turned that down because being close to family was very important.

“The reason everyone loves Amanda is because of who she is. The moment you take her away from here, from her brother and sister and home, well, you might not have Amanda anymore,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 1999.

Rick and Lynn were also protective outside the home. During her appearance on The Tonight Show in 2007, Amanda told host Jay Leno that her parents accompanied her to places.

“My parents were actually really strict, in a good way, though. They never let me go to the mall by myself or with friends. I had to go with them. … I think suspicious things happen at malls,” she explained.

Her Father’s Work as a Dentist

As Amanda was growing up, Rick worked as a dentist in Thousand Oaks, California. While he earned his living practicing dentistry, he also enjoyed performing comedy in his spare time – which meant he made all his patients laugh, according to Amanda.

“He loves to do comedy,” she said on The Howie Mandel Show in 1999. “He makes everyone laugh … so they don’t mind going to the dentist.”

Rick even sent a joke to Leno once in the early ‘90s, which was aired live. When Amanda appeared on the late-night show more than a decade later, her father got the chance to perform the joke himself.

Rick Encouraged Amanda to Try Acting at a Young Age

Amanda and her siblings were encouraged by their father to try acting, stemming from his passion for comedy. Lynn quickly noticed that her youngest child was a natural and enjoyed entertaining.

“By the time she was three, she would put on my clothes and be silly, trying to get her sister and brother’s attention,” she told PEOPLE in 2004.

At the age of seven, Amanda began appearing in commercials as well as in local theater productions. She also performed stand-up comedy, with Rick helping her write material about growing up and family life. By the time she was ten, her father enrolled her in a children’s comedy camp hosted at the Comedy Club in Los Angeles.

In a 2000 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Amanda shared, “All the adults were laughing instead of kicking me off the stage. It was such an exciting experience. It was embarrassing, but I loved it so much that they literally had to pull me off.”

During one of her performances, Nickelodeon executives discovered her, who quickly recruited her to join the cast of All That.

Rick and Lynn Moved to Texas but Returned to Los Angeles to Care for Amanda

In

In the future, Amanda’s parents Lynn and Rick moved to Texas, where they lived for several years as their daughter’s fame grew with a series of notable projects, including the WB series What I Like About You, the romantic musical film Hairspray, and the teen drama Easy A.

Her career halted when she announced her retirement from acting on X (formerly known as Twitter) in 2010. Amanda admitted that 24 was a “young age to retire,” but revealed that she no longer “loved acting anymore,” according to NBC News.

Two years later, TMZ reported that Lynn and Rick decided to move back to Los Angeles to care for their daughter amid her struggles.

Amanda’s Parents Placed Under Legal Guardianship in 2013

When Amanda was first placed under psychiatric hold in 2013, her mother Lynn was granted temporary conservatorship, according to PEOPLE’s confirmation at the time.

Upon receiving custody of her daughter, Lynn planned to hire a private guardian to assist her with Amanda’s medical and daily needs while still maintaining control over her estate and financial affairs.

In 2018, amid news of Amanda’s improvement, court documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight showed that the conservatorship was extended for another two years.
