When the winter holidays are over, they leave behind exhausted credit cards and some purchases that are regretted as soon as the post-Christmas sales, also known as Boxing Day sales in many countries, begin. When shopping for a large number of people, it’s hard not to buy some items for yourself too.
But waiting until after Christmas sales can save you a lot of money. We spoke with three savvy shoppers to find out which items you should wait to buy until after Christmas to save some cash.
1. Winter Clothes
When new winter clothes hit the shelves, they are priced at a premium and don’t drop much as winter sets in. Kari Rocha, founder of Pocket Your Dollars, advises shoppers to plan for the next year to save money on winter gear. “January and July are the times of year when retailers are refreshing their inventory for the new season. This makes January a great time to buy winter gear for next year for you and your kids.”
Children can be a challenge if they are growing rapidly, but parents usually feel safe buying the next size up.
2. Toys and Small Gifts
As Christmas wraps up, retailers are left with excess stock of makeup sets, toys, gift baskets, and much more. These items are quickly moved to the clearance section to make room for regular merchandise again.
Rocha says, “I keep an eye on toy markdowns at 70% off or more and then buy toys for my kids’ birthdays and to keep a stash of gifts for relatives’ kids and school friends.” She adds, “I also stock up on gifts for adults for unexpected occasions. A spa set is a great gift for welcoming new neighbors, returning a favor, or just to say thank you.”
3. Decorations
Like winter clothes, the prices of decorations and other Christmas items don’t change much until the big day is over. Kristal Bell from Money Saving Mom says, “There will be discounts of 50% to 75% on Christmas trees, lights, ornaments, wrapping paper, and more a few weeks after Christmas. Buying decorations ahead of time for next year will save you a lot of money.”
4. Fitness Products
The fitness industry operates contrary to the logic that suggests raising prices during high-demand periods. That’s because the demand for fitness goods post-Christmas is weak as it relies on a single tradition.
Bell explains, “Most people resolve to get fit and lose weight in the New Year. Retailers and gyms know this and capitalize on everyone’s good intentions by offering sales on fitness equipment, workout videos, and gym memberships after the New Year starts.”
While everything from exercise balls to treadmills can be purchased cheaply in the new year, there are even bigger deals in the second-hand market. Bell says, “If you can wait a few extra months, you can find great deals on Craigslist and at yard sales for almost new fitness equipment that people bought at the beginning of the year and never used.”
5. Food
Food is in demand all year round, but the type of food that is sought after changes significantly after the holidays. Elidge says that after Christmas is the perfect time to score great deals in grocery aisles.
He explains, “Baking supplies, wine, cheese, and seasonal product flavors are all on their way out. Grocers cut back a lot of what’s left from the holiday season to make room for the healthy foods that everyone seems to want in January.”
6. Consumer Electronics
Elidge says, “Black Friday can have some great electronic deals, but you can find similar or better deals after the New Year. The Consumer Electronics Show happens every January and showcases new items and models. Retailers know that these new models are coming, so they want to get rid of last year’s models to free up shelf space.”
