In 2023, many ultra-wealthy individuals saw their fortunes increase significantly. With stock markets rising worldwide, more than half of the world’s billionaires were wealthier than they had been on the first day of the new year. Of course, some wealthy individuals were luckier than others. The top ten earners added an estimated $490 billion to their fortunes by December 15, 2023, according to Forbes estimates.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Wealth of the Richest Tech Investors
Seven of the top ten wealthiest individuals are billionaires in the tech sector. If 2022 was the year of reckoning for big tech companies, 2023 was a year of recovery, with the Nasdaq index composed of tech companies rising by 42%, compared to a 23% increase in the broader S&P 500 index. The stocks of the “fantastic seven” – Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Tesla, and Meta – rose significantly, contributing to the increase in their owners’ wealth.
The Richest Ten Billionaires in 2023
One of the richest this year became Elon Musk, whom Forbes ranks as a billionaire in the automotive sector because most of his wealth comes from electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla. Musk started 2023 as the second richest person in the world, with an estimated fortune of around $146.5 billion after losing more than anyone else in 2022. He ended the year ranked first, having added more than $108 billion to his net worth due to a remarkable turnaround in Tesla’s stock.
Among the top ten earners this year, only two are from outside the United States: Indonesian businessman Prajogo Pangestu, who owns fortunes in petrochemicals and energy, the largest percentage gain of the year (over 900%), and Spanish businessman Amancio Ortega, behind the fashion retailer Zara.
