Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah passes away at the age of 86: Royal Court

Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, passed away on Saturday at the age of 86, according to a statement issued by the royal court.
Kuwaiti television broadcast Qur’anic verses before announcing the news.
At the end of November, he was transferred to the hospital due to a medical condition, and it was later announced that his condition was stable.
Sheikh Nawaf was appointed Crown Prince in 2006 by his brother Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and assumed the position of Emir upon Sheikh Sabah’s death in September 2020 at the age of 91.
He was tasked with leading the economy during a crisis caused by falling oil prices in 2020.
Sheikh Nawaf had previously held the positions of Minister of Interior and Minister of Defense in Kuwait.
Kuwait is home to the most active and powerful parliament in the Gulf.
After successive resignations of governments and dissolved parliaments, the current government in Kuwait is the fifth this year.
The necessary political situation has stalled and hindered development projects, leaving infrastructure and education in a state of deterioration.
Sheikh Nawaf was born in 1937, the fifth son of the late ruler of Kuwait from 1921 to 1950, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
He began his political life at the age of 25 as Governor of Hawalli Governorate, where he remained until 1978 when he began a decade-long tenure as Minister of Interior.
