Is it? If you’re looking for a large Android phone in a compact package, this device is for you. It’s also great for capturing creative selfies as the foldable screen acts as a stand.
Pros: Beautiful design and finish, excellent performance, sharp displays, robust design.
Cons: Limited functionality of the outer screen by default, weak app continuity between screens.
Best Camera: Google Pixel Fold
Google’s first attempt at making a foldable phone is generally successful. Powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chip, it features an excellent array of capabilities including AI-assisted photo editing, offline voice transcription, and even offline translation. The design is sleek with a short and wide 5.8-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen that makes reading feel natural. It doesn’t have as many productivity software enhancements as Samsung’s foldable phones but has much better cameras.
Who is it for? If you find the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s outer screen too narrow, or prefer the Google version of Android, or want the best available cameras on a modern foldable phone, then the Google Pixel Fold is the best choice.
Pros: Excellent build quality, capable cameras, vibrant displays.
Cons: Multitasking capabilities could be better, the crease in the screen can be distracting, it’s expensive.
Most Affordable: Motorola Razr (2023)
The Moto Razr features a huge 6.9-inch display in a compact package. The 1.5-inch outer display isn’t as useful as larger screens on other flip phones, but it still manages basic notifications and serves as a small viewfinder for the 64-megapixel camera selfies. Although Motorola uses the older Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor here to cut costs, the phone still runs smoothly. Finally, the Ready For feature allows you to connect the phone to an external display or Windows PC for a desktop-like experience.
Who is it for? If you want to experience foldable phones without spending a lot of money, the Motorola Razr offers the best value in the market. It’s not as powerful as other devices, but it still looks very stylish.
Pros: Affordable, portable and stylish design, bright display, useful software enhancements from Motorola.
Cons: Small, basic outer display, older processor.
When is the best time to buy a new foldable phone?
Foldable phones aren’t announced as frequently as regular phones, but they still arrive regularly. There’s no bad time to buy as long as the phone has all the features you want. As for the specific release windows for each company, Samsung usually updates its Galaxy Z Flip and Fold series every August. Whether Google and Motorola will continue their annual updates in May and June respectively remains to be seen.
What are the types of foldable phones?
Foldable phones mainly come in two designs: book-style and clamshell design. Book-style phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold feature an outer display nearly the size of a regular phone and open to reveal a larger tablet-sized screen. Meanwhile, clamshell-style devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola Razr+ have a small outer display and resemble a regular phone when unfolded.
How durable are foldable phones?
Foldable phones suffer from design weaknesses due to hinges. Anytime you add a moving part, you introduce a point of failure. The hinges are designed well but will wear down over time. Samsung claims its Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 can withstand 200,000 folds over their lifetime, while Motorola states that the Razr+ can handle 400,000 folds. That’s a lot of movement on the hinge. More specifically, 200,000 folds translates to about 100 folds every day for over 5 years.
What…
the foldable screen? Gorilla Glass protects the external screens of some foldable phones from damage caused by drops and scratches. The nature of flexible internal screens prevents manufacturers from coating them with the same durable resistant materials as traditional phones, but they are generally protected by a secondary layer of foldable glass.
Due to the engineering challenges posed by the hinge, no foldable phone has achieved a full IP68 dust and water resistance rating yet. The Moto Razr+ has a weak IP52 rating, meaning it resists most dust and can withstand small amounts of water (basic splashes). Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has an IPX8 rating; not rated for dust protection at all, but fully resistant to water.
What is the size of foldable phones?
Like regular smartphones, foldable phones have become thinner and lighter over the years. The original Galaxy Fold resembled two stacked smartphones, with a thickness of 0.7 inches when closed. However, the latest Galaxy Z Fold 5 is only 0.53 inches thick when closed (a 0.21-inch difference compared to the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max). Weighing 8.92 ounces, the Fold 5 does not weigh more than the largest iPhone (7.81 ounces).
Clamshell-style foldable phones remain relatively thick when closed. For example, the Z Flip 5 has a thickness of 0.60 inches. But it is not very wide (2.8 inches) or long (3.4 inches) or heavy (6.6 ounces). Of course, foldable phones are half as thick when opened, so the Fold 5 is 0.27 inches thick and the Flip 5 is 0.30 inches thick.
What is the use of foldable phones?
Since you can use foldable phones closed or open, the experience is slightly different from a regular phone. Taking a selfie is a good example of how things differ. When you take selfies on a regular phone, you typically use the front camera to see yourself. Because foldable phones have multiple screens where you can see yourself, the best camera changes depending on what you are doing and what type of picture you want.
There are currently no foldable iPhones, which means Android is the only platform for foldable phones. The good news is that the platform is robust and should be familiar to anyone who has used an Android phone in recent years. However, Android struggles with use on very small or very large screens as most apps are not designed with these screen sizes in mind.
Each phone manufacturing company deals with this issue in different ways. Motorola’s Razr+ allows you to run almost any app on its small front screen, but warns you of potential compatibility issues. In comparison, Samsung deliberately limits the external screen of the Flip 5 to a few specific apps.
For the large internal screens of book-style phones, they have to deal with the same issues faced by many Android tablets, namely expansion and limitations in multitasking capabilities. Once again, phone companies differ in how they handle this problem. For example, the Google Pixel Fold allows you to run two apps simultaneously on the internal screen along with a floating video window. While Samsung’s One UI allows you to split up to three apps, open a video player at the top, and access other apps in a pop-up view. Here, the latter approach is more effective for multitasking.
Manufacturers have their own ideas when it comes to continuity in apps. Should the app continue from the small outer screen to the larger screen and vice versa? By default, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 assumes that you will not be using the outer screen immediately after closing the device. But Motorola’s Razr+ gives you the option to continue the app on the front display after closing the device. Almost all foldable phones expand the app being used on the outer screen to the full inner screen when the phone is opened.
This all means you can find ways to get the experience you want from a foldable device with two screens. It may take some adjustments.
What about that crease?
Foldable phone screens still have a visible crease running parallel to the hinge. In our experience, the crease is more noticeable if the screen is closed or if you are viewing the screen from an off-angle. When using apps, playing games, or watching videos, the slight difference in the screen is easy to ignore. Additionally, improvements in flexible screens and hinges have made the crease less noticeable and more durable on newer models.
What awaits foldable phones in the future?
As the technology behind foldable phones evolves, devices are likely to become more durable, with smaller bezels, and hold more power in thinner and lighter frames. Will Apple create a foldable iPhone? They have not officially committed to the idea. At the same time, there have been rumors of foldable phones coming at a lower cost than Samsung at some point in 2024, but Samsung has since denied this report. Samsung’s history shows a track record of bringing flagship features to less expensive devices, so it seems there’s a possibility of a Z Fold FE emerging (let’s hope so at least).
We may also see different foldable designs in the future. In 2020, TCL introduced a triple-folding device with a massive 10-inch display. This device is still a concept and has not reached the market yet. Some foldable phones outside the U.S. are also showcasing new ideas. For example, the Honor V Purse resembles a digital handbag with a camera strap on the outer edge. Rollable screens are another way to pack a larger display into a smaller package, but these won’t be available anytime soon.
If and when these new devices appear, we intend to review them and update this summary with any new details. Be sure to check back regularly for the latest news.
