The Social Security Administration (SSA) analyzed millions of records and discovered the most popular names for children from Generation X born between 1970 and 1979.
Top 10 Boys’ Names of the 1970s
1. Michael: A Hebrew name meaning “who is like God.” It is considered one of the most common names worldwide.
2. Christopher: A Greek name meaning “bearer of Christ.”
3. Jason: A Greek name meaning “the healer.”
4. David: A Hebrew name meaning “beloved.”
5. James: Means “the supplanter” in Hebrew. A common and timeless name in nearly every decade.
6. John: A Hebrew name meaning “God is gracious.” It is thought to be derived from the Latin-Greek name Ioannes.
7. Robert: An English name meaning “bright fame.”
8. Brian: An Irish name of uncertain meaning but thought to mean “high” or “noble.”
9. William: An English name of Germanic origins meaning “will, protection, desire, and helmet.”
10. Matthew: An English name derived from the Hebrew name Mattityahu meaning “gift of God.”

Changes in Names Over the Years

The top 5 boys’ names in 2022 were Liam, Noah, Oliver, James, and Elijah.
As for girls, none of the top five names from the 1970s made it to the top 10 girls’ names list in 2022.
The top 10 girls’ names in 2022 were Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, Evelyn, and Luna.
The Social Security Administration has not yet released the top 10 baby names for 2023.
