Review of Norton Password Manager

Getting Started with Norton Password Manager

Norton Password Manager is a free browser-based password management application that offers unlimited password storage with passwordless access. It is easy to set up and provides seamless synchronization across different platforms. However, it lacks important features found in other free password managers, such as secure credential sharing and support for common forms of multi-factor authentication. Bitwarden offers excellent free password management with many features, so it remains our top choice for free password managers.

Authentication Options in Norton Password Manager

After changing the master password, Norton sends another alert to your sidebar, encouraging the adoption of passwordless login for the account. Accessing the vault without a password requires biometric authentication (using a fingerprint or facial scan) with your mobile device. The login process is quick and easy. 1Password and Keeper also allow users to log into their vaults using passwordless authentication.

Norton on Data Privacy and Security

Before we review and test the password manager, we send a questionnaire to the password management company to inquire about its practices regarding privacy and security. In a previous version of this review, Norton failed to respond to questions regarding data security breaches or company policies, so we provided that information to their customers. After the review was published, the company responded with answers to our inquiries about data breaches and provided links to its policy pages in response to our questions about how it protects customer data. Where necessary, we derived answers to our questions from the links Norton provided.

Norton Password Manager Browser Extension

If you are switching from another password manager, you can import your passwords into the Norton Password Manager vault. Other password managers can import from many competitors. Norton can only import from the following password managers: Dashlane, LastPass, 1Password, McAfee True Key, and other cases from Norton Password Manager. In contrast, Bitwarden can import from over 50 competitors, including LastPass, Dashlane, and RoboForm.

Capturing and Resuming Passwords in Norton Password Manager

In testing, capturing credentials using the Norton Password Manager browser extension was more complex than we would like to see. While trying to create an account on social media sites, we found it necessary to open the browser extension window and click on the plus sign. This action opened the vault in a new tab. Then, it was possible to create new credentials and manually paste the new password into the form. Capturing passwords should always be a seamless process, as demonstrated by 1Password and Keeper. Both password managers offer browser extensions that act as mini vaults, allowing you to update and access your credentials from the browser extension window.

Password Generator in Norton Password Manager

You can use the password generator in Norton to create a new entry. It would be better if the password generator automatically created a new password every time the user creates a new entry. Currently, Norton users have to create a password using the web-based password generator, copy the text, and paste it into the login field, then save those credentials in their vault. This requires several clicks for a process that other password managers streamline by integrating the password generator into the browser extension.

Storage

Filling Forms in Norton Password Manager

The vault contains a wallet that you can use to store credit card information, a section for address information, and a notes section where you can input any text you want. By clicking the plus sign icon on the far right side of the top navigation menu, you can create additional addresses, logins, notes, and wallet entries. Norton does not allow file storage, which is typical in free password managers. With other password managers, file storage is a premium add-on service. Keeper allows users on a paid plan to add up to 100 GB of file storage for $79.99 per year.

Norton Password Manager Mobile App Experience

The Norton Password Manager app is available for both Android and iOS. We tested the app’s functionality using an iPhone 12 mini running iOS 16.

In the test, filling in credentials was easy using the Norton Password Manager app on mobile devices. On both Android and iOS, you can enable Norton Password Manager’s autofill capabilities in the mobile device settings menu. Then, you open the app, click on the credential entry to go to the login page, and tap the Norton icon at the bottom of the page to fill in the required fields.

Adequate Password Management and Nothing More

Norton Password Manager allows you to create unique and complex login credentials securely across the web. It also provides a vault to store your credentials without a master password and features biometric authentication and seamless synchronization across different platforms. However, the app lacks strong support for multi-factor authentication, sharing capabilities, password inheritance options, and form filling for diverse datasets. We also found that creating and logging into social media credentials was not always a smooth process. To find the missing features from Norton Password Manager, check out Dashlane, the editor’s choice for paid password managers. As mentioned above, Bitwarden is our top choice for free password management thanks to its ease of use and numerous features.
