What is a reprint?
A reprint is a copy of an article or announcement. It is available exactly as it was originally printed, on glossy paper of 70 grams thickness, in quantities that double by 100 up to a total of 300 copies. Reprints can be ordered in black and white or full color, and they can be customized by adding formats, logos, and additional covers. Can I add a cover to my reprint?

Permission Requests
Why should I use Rightslink® for permissions?
Where possible, all permissions for NPG materials are processed through Rightslink®. This allows for the fastest turnaround time for reviewers and enables us to track all requests through one system. Can I still fax a publisher form to you for your signature?
No. NPG will no longer sign and return standard permission forms from other publishers, as these forms do not contain NPG’s terms and conditions. A printable license is available through Rightslink®. I received free permission in the past. Why am I now being asked to pay?
While preparing the Rightslink® application, we reviewed our permission pricing. While reasonable amounts of materials are still granted for free to academics and various non-profit institutions, we have updated our billing policy to protect the value of what we publish. My publisher is a member of STM, yet I’m still being asked to pay. Why?
Apply
NPG’s STM policy on permissions only applies to those publishers who are actually signed onto the agreement [82k PDF]. Get free permission. Why do I need to enter my credit card details on Rightslink®?
You don’t need to. If you register for invoice payment (even if you won’t be paying on this occasion), you will not be required to enter your credit card details. The use I need permission for is not listed as an option in Rightslink®.
Are you sure? Please keep in mind that we are primarily interested in the production of the materials, rather than the media in which the materials will appear. So if you are, for example, producing a CD for CME training purposes, you should select “use in training materials” as the “type of use.” It doesn’t matter to us that you can’t actually enter “CD.”
If you are sure that the intended use cannot be met through Rightslink®, please contact the appropriate journal permissions manager. I need permission to reuse online published materials as supplementary information for a research paper. What should I do?
NPG does not have the right to grant permission for supplementary information. Please submit a request to the authors of the paper. I need permission to adapt NPG materials. Will the license from Rightslink® allow that?
Yes. The terms and conditions generated when processing a permission through Rightslink® allow for adapting the materials without needing additional permission. I need permission to reproduce NPG materials in print and electronics. What should I do?
Free permission granted through Rightslink® for printed materials is generally also granted for any other electronic version of that work, provided that the materials are subsidiary to the work as a whole and that the electronic version is nearly equivalent to the printed version or supplants it.
Where print permission is granted for a fee, separate permission must be obtained for any additional electronic reuse (unless it was already counted during the initial request in the total number of printed copies).
PDF Files for Electronic Publishing
What is an electronic publishing PDF file?
An E-Print file is an HTML version of a paper that can be hosted on a website for viewing by multiple users. E-Print files are sold on the basis of a certain number of downloads or a time period, and the buyer is notified once this limit is reached. E-Print files are encrypted and require a one-time internet connection that allows your E-Print file to verify its validity. Can I add a cover to my E-Print file?
Yes, there are two types of covers: a title page cover, which includes the journal logo, article title, author name(s), and citation information, or the cover of the required issue of the journal. Can I add additional information to my E-Print file?
E-Print files can be customized by adding additional formats (including supplementary information published online), product codes or logos, as well as information about your project or organization, or a biography or advertisement. Additional fees may apply. Can old articles be provided as E-Print files?
Yes, any article available in our digital archive can be converted into an E-Print file. The weekly journal nature is available back to 1869 and most other journals are available from their inception. Can I see a draft of my E-Print file?
Yes, although drafts are not standard, you can request a draft. How is usage calculated? Can I track it?
Usage is tracked by IP address. Please contact your sales representative to verify the remaining time or downloads on your E-Print file. What happens when E-Print usage runs out?
It will
Your E-Print file license is about to expire. At that time, you may renew the license if you choose to do so. Please note that all quantity E-Print files expire two years after the E-Print file’s publication date (date of the live broadcast). What version of Acrobat Reader do I need?
Acrobat 7.0 or higher is required to view a PDF file, it will not be displayed on earlier versions.
What payment methods are accepted?
You can pay by purchase order, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express), personal check, wire transfer, and bank transfer. Government and institutional purchase cards are also accepted. Please email author-reprints@nature.com for details.
