Oscar Winners to Dominate the Small Screen in 2024 with These New Shows – Featuring Michelle Yeoh, Nicole Kidman, and More

Broadcast networks and traditional television channels are gearing up to recover from a year of production shutdowns and delayed releases, lining up a full slate of new shows for early 2024. The schedule promises a roster of talent as the most distinguished Oscar-winning actors from Hollywood are set to appear on the small screen.

What to Watch at the 2024 Oscars

“The Brothers Sun” will premiere on Netflix on January 4, 2024. Michelle Yeoh, last year’s Oscar winner for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” stars in a new Netflix series titled “The Brothers Sun” about the death of a Taiwanese triad leader and the grave repercussions for his family (premiering on January 4).

Peter Capaldi, who won an Oscar in 1995, will star in the Apple TV+ series “Criminal Record” as a detective determined to protect his legacy while battling a young woman over an old murder case (premiering on January 12).

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (Best Actress, 2003) will lead the series “Expats,” an adaptation of “The Expatriates” on Prime Video, which follows the lives of several expatriates living in Hong Kong (premiering on January 26).

Tom Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner (1994 and 1995), will narrate an original documentary series about natural history titled “The Americas,” which is set to air on NBC next year, although a final release date has yet to be determined.

Oscar Nominees Bring Their Talent to the Small Screen

Several Oscar nominees are taking their talents to the small screen. Austin Butler, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in “Elvis” last year, stars in a World War II film titled “Masters of the Air,” which will be available on Apple TV+ on January 26. Clive Owen, nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2005, will reprise the legendary detective Humphrey Bogart in the AMC series “Monsieur Spade” (premiering on January 14). Seth MacFarlane, nominated for Best Original Song, will bring the film series “Ted” to a prior show on Peacock starting January 11. Helena Bonham Carter, who has received two Oscar nominations, plays Noel Gordon in a biopic series on PBS titled “Nolly” about the star known for the show “Crossroads” (premiering on March 17). Annette Bening, a four-time Oscar nominee, stars in an adaptation of “Apples Never Fall” by author Liane Moriarty on Peacock, a series that will begin in March 2024. Colin Farrell, who was nominated for Best Actor last year for his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” is set to star as one of Gotham’s most reputable criminals in the series “The Penguin” on Max this fall. Robert Downey Jr., nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, will appear in the series “The Sympathizer” on Max next year, a thrilling espionage series set in the final days of the Vietnam War. Harvey Keitel (nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1992) will present “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” to Peacock, the first television drama entirely scored by Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Kara Talvi.

Main Background

Historic strikes by writers and actors have cast a shadow over Hollywood studios this year, resulting in the postponement of new television seasons, films, and more. Thousands of workers were put out of work and production on nearly all original series and films was halted, costing economies in states heavily reliant on production, like California, over $6.5 billion. Networks had to rearrange their schedules to adapt to a lack of new content – for example, “Monday Night Football” returned to ABC for the first time in nearly two decades to fill the schedule gap, but production was allowed to resume in November and shows like “Abbott Elementary,” “Bridgerton,” and “House of the Dragon” are slated to return this year.
