The Evolution of McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, and In-N-Out
Old photos show how McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, and In-N-Out have changed over the years.
McDonald’s in the 1950s and 1970s
The first McDonald’s franchise opened on April 15, 1955, in Des Plaines, Illinois. It only sold hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, milk, root beer, juice, Coca-Cola, coffee, and three flavors of milkshakes: chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla.
McDonald’s in the 1970s and 1980s
In the 1970s, McDonald’s employees wrote down orders by hand instead of using an electronic system. In 1975, McDonald’s restaurants introduced drive-thru windows for the first time. In 1979, the first Happy Meals were introduced.
Expansion of McDonald’s Menu in the 1980s
McDonald’s menu expanded further in the 1980s, with the addition of chicken nuggets in 1983 and the “Super Size” option for fries and sodas introduced in the summer of 1987. According to a Bloomberg report, McDonald’s had tested numerous other items over the years, and by 2013, it had 145 options on its menu.
Burger King in the 1950s and 1980s
When Burger King first opened in 1953, it offered flame-grilled burgers for 18 cents, milkshakes, and fries. In the 1980s, the fast food chain had a recognizable brand identity.
Expansion of Burger King’s Menu in the 1980s
Burger King’s menu has not changed much since the 1980s, but some may be surprised to learn that Burger King had a customizable salad bar. In 1957, the chain introduced its signature “Whopper,” which cost 37 cents, compared to the original Burger King’s burger that cost 18 cents.
Taco Bell in the 1960s and 1980s
Taco Bell was founded in 1962 in Downey, California. The Taco Bell menu only contained five items when the restaurant opened in 1962, each costing 19 cents. In 1984, Taco Bell introduced the taco salad and the Taco Bell Grande, and in 2004, Taco Bell began selling Mountain Dew Baja Blast.
Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1950s and 1970s
Kentucky Fried Chicken was founded in 1952 by Colonel Harland Sanders, who became the face of the brand. By 1975, the restaurants looked as shown in the picture.
White Castle in the 1960s and 1970s
White Castle is considered the world’s first fast-food hamburger chain. When the restaurant opened, it sold hamburgers for 5 cents. In 1961, White Castle became the first fast-food hamburger chain to sell over a billion hamburgers. The following year, the chain introduced a new item: the cheese slider.
Chick-fil-A in the 1960s and 1980s
The first Chick-fil-A restaurant opened in 1946 in Hapeville, Georgia. In 1967, the first restaurant under the Chick-fil-A name opened in a mall in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1986, Chick-fil-A opened its first standalone restaurant, and standalone restaurants are now the most common.
In-N-Out in the 1940s and 1970s
In-N-Out became the first fast-food restaurant with a drive-thru when it opened in 1948. The In-N-Out menu has not changed much since then. In 1961, In-N-Out added the “Animal Style” burger to its menu, and in 1975, In-N-Out began serving milkshakes. A few years later, In-N-Out opened its first restaurant with a dining room in Ontario, California.
