A news report says former President Donald Trump pressured two Republican members of the canvassing board in Wayne County, Michigan, to not certify the results of the 2020 presidential election, according to audio recordings reviewed by the Detroit News. This comes as Trump faces two election interference cases and exclusion from the 2024 presidential election in Colorado.

Key Facts

According to the report, Trump told canvassing board members, Monica Palmer and the late William Hartmann, that they would look “bad” if they signed the certification documents after initially voting against it and then voting to certify the election results in Wayne County. The Detroit News reported, citing a phone call from November 2020 that included Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel, that McDaniel told the board members not to sign the certification and that they would get lawyers, echoing Trump’s remarks that “we can’t let these people take our country from us” during the call.

The board members did not sign the official statement of votes in Wayne County, which includes Detroit, and they later attempted unsuccessfully to withdraw their votes in favor of certification and submitted affidavits claiming they were pressured, according to the Detroit News. Palmer and McDaniel did not deny the summary of the call when presented with it by the Detroit News through a spokesperson.

Trump’s spokesperson did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment.

The Big Number

18% is the percentage of Wayne County’s population in Michigan, where approximately 878,000 votes were cast in the 2020 presidential election, according to the Detroit News.

Main Background

President Joe Biden won Michigan by a margin of about 150,000 votes. In Wayne County, the margin between Biden and Trump was much larger, with Biden receiving nearly 600,000 votes to Trump’s 265,553. The report on the audio recordings comes just days after Trump was excluded from the 2024 presidential election in Colorado. The Colorado Supreme Court ruled 4-3 to disqualify the former president based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals who have taken an oath of office and “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the United States from holding public office. However, the ruling may not have an immediate impact on the upcoming presidential election, as Trump’s appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court will be delayed until it issues its ruling. Trump also faces charges in two election interference cases at both the state and federal levels.
