Amid his ongoing trial for misdemeanor assault, text messages and audio recordings allegedly sent by Jonathan Majors to his accuser Grace Jabari were revealed in court.
Alleged Text Messages
The messages, shared by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, show that the 34-year-old actor told his 30-year-old ex-girlfriend – who accused him in March of assaulting her in the backseat of a car – that she needed to act more like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama. In one text message, he threatened to commit suicide while she was contemplating going to the hospital after suffering a head injury during a previous altercation.
Charges Against Actor Jonathan Majors
Majors faces third-degree assault charges intended to cause physical injury, third-degree reckless assault causing physical injury, second-degree aggravated harassment, and second-degree harassment. If convicted, the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star could face up to one year in jail.
Text Messages and the Past Relationship
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the text messages from September 2022 were during the time Majors and Jabari were still in a relationship. At that time, Majors did not want his ex-girlfriend to seek medical help, as he attempted to dissuade her from doing so through text messages.
In a text message in response, Jabari wrote: “I will tell the doctor I hit my head, if I go, I’ll give it one more day, but I can’t sleep and I need some stronger painkillers. That’s it. Why would I want to tell them what really happened when it’s clear I want to be with you?”
At this time, the actor shared his alleged suicidal thoughts, writing in response: “I thought about killing myself last night.”
A partially redacted text message shows Jabari trying to calm Majors’ fears, promising not to say anything to the doctor if asked about how the alleged injury occurred and ultimately backing off from seeing a medical professional if he didn’t feel safe.
In response, the actor wrote in a text message: “Maybe I’ll kill myself. I’m not thinking about it anymore.” In the following message, he repeated his self-harm threat. The actor allegedly wrote: “I’m a monster. A terrible man. Unable to love. I’ll kill myself soon. I’ve already started to move things.”
Photos and Audio Recordings
In addition to the text messages shared by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, prosecutors also presented photos of the injuries Jabari allegedly sustained at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.
In one photo, the dancer is depicted with a wound behind her ear. Another image shows a severe injury to her finger. X-ray images showing a fracture in Jabari’s finger were displayed on Monday.
The doctor also reported that Jabari received a splint for her injury and was treated for the two-centimeter long wound behind her ear.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office also released audio recordings of interactions between the former couple, in which Majors appears to question his ex-girlfriend’s dedication to him and urges her to be more like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama.
In the recording, he says: “Do you really love me? Do you really love me… then how dare you come home drunk and disturb the peace of our home when we have a plan?” The actor continues: “I would like to get to the point where your friends know what my work is and say ‘I think Grace will be unavailable.’ Do you understand?” Jabari replies: “Yes, I won’t do that.” Majors continues: “No, no, do you understand that? Because this team, this unit, right? Grace needs to have a certain mindset to support – Coretta Scott King, do you know who she is? She’s Martin Luther King’s wife. Michelle Obama, Barack Obama’s wife.” Jabari says: “I know, I shouldn’t have gone out. I’m sorry.” He then continues that he is a great man doing great things in the world and that he needs her to support him in being a great woman.
Rejection
Request to Dismiss Charges
On a single day, Judge Michael Jaffe denied a motion to dismiss the charges against Majors, filed by his lawyers Priya Chaudhry and Seth Zucker. They claimed that the prosecution did not have enough evidence for the case, which Jaffe disagreed with. The judge had previously denied another request to dismiss the charges against him.
Testimony of Detective Roni Mega
On the same day, the prosecutors finished presenting their case and Majors’ defense team called up counter witnesses. Among the witnesses presented was Detective Roni Mega, a New York Police investigator who arrested Jabari in October on charges of misdemeanor assault with intent to cause physical injury and criminal mischief with intent to damage property.
According to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department who spoke with ET at the time of the arrest, Jabari turned herself in to the police at the 10th precinct on a charge of hitting Majors earlier this year.
According to court documents, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that they would not pursue any charges brought by the New York Police against Jabari regarding the alleged incident.
The document states: “On September 8, 2023, and September 12, 2023, the prosecution informed the New York Police that the people would be abandoning any charges brought by the New York Police against Ms. Jabari related to the late claims made by the defendant regarding the incident on March 25, 2023,” the legal document continues: “On September 12, 2023, the people informed the defense attorney of these communications, noting that the District Attorney’s Office had not notified Ms. Jabari or her attorney of the office’s decision.”
Jabari’s Testimony
On December 5, Jabari testified that she received a “blow” to her head during a violent argument that escalated to physical violence.
Jabari, who met Creed III star while filming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in London, alleged in her testimony that the actor became physically violent after she discovered a text message he sent to another woman saying he wished to kiss her.
She said she was resting her head on his shoulder when she saw him send a text saying “I wish I could kiss you.” She said she was shocked because she did not consider infidelity an issue in their relationship.
She then explained how she grabbed his phone and turned away from him to look at his phone. Jabari claimed he tried to take the phone back, and this is when she alleges he became physically violent.
She said: “Then I felt a heavy weight on top of me – it was his body weight.” She continued: “He was trying to yank the phone from my hand. When that wasn’t successful, he took my arm behind my back. I felt a sharp pain. I felt a hit on the right side of my head. I felt a strong impact to the back of my head. I was in so much pain, so I leaned back, and there he got the phone from my hand. I wasn’t focused on the pain though; I was trying to figure out who the woman was.”
An eyewitness told ET that Majors appeared visibly upset during Jabari’s testimony, claiming he was no longer calm and had become anxious. At one point, he turned to his mother and girlfriend, Megan Good, who were present in the courtroom.
Jabari’s Testimony About the Relationship
Earlier in the day, Jabari told the court that she felt like she was walking on eggshells during their relationship, especially in July 2022, when she stated Majors was training with bodybuilders for an upcoming film. She said during that time Majors’ mood changed for the worse. She said she could feel his tension, so she asked him to tell her what was bothering him and not to keep anything inside. Then, suddenly, Jabari alleged that he began to scream at her and throw things.
She said: “He has a violent temper.” She added: “I was trying to get away from him. We had three bedrooms, and we were in the master bedroom at that time. He was throwing things very close to me, and I was doing my best to calm him down.”
Majors was also said to be “wonderful” and “very sweet” at the beginning of the relationship. She claimed – with Jud by her side – that he told her he loved her very early in the relationship. Jud has been beside Majors since the start of his trial.
