Expressing his discontent with Jaishankar’s visit to Russia, former U.S. ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, accused New Delhi of adopting “Imperial Russia.”
Jaishankar’s Visit to Russia
The visit of Indian Foreign Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, to Russia, which also included a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has recently concluded, marking a rare deviation from Kremlin protocol.
The visit comes as a testament to the flourishing political and economic relations between the two powers, despite increasing obstacles over the past two years due to the Russian war in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed by the West.
Indian Reactions
Indian reactions to Jaishankar’s visit to Russia have been extensive, with Indians sharply criticizing McFaul’s comments and flooding the response section with harsh remarks.
One user wrote: “Why should you assume that money is more important than values? You’re American. You have always placed money above values over the past 300 years.”
Another added: “I hope you heard about ‘America’s interests’ when your country supported the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba and the army and others. India has not committed any such disgraceful acts.”
Expert Opinions
Geopolitical experts also raised questions regarding the ambassador’s comments, agreeing that India is serving its own interests.
Jeff M. Smith, director of the Asian Studies Center at the Heritage Foundation, wrote: “It’s not a matter of ‘money.’ Interests are more important than values. This applies to us too when we meet leaders from Saudi Arabia or Egypt. If we meet a dictator when he is committing genocide or Pakistani generals when they are sponsoring terrorism, we cannot lecture India about meeting with Putin.”
Jukul Sahni, a geopolitical expert, sarcastically responded to the ambassador’s comments: “It’s always great to be accused of pursuing a foreign policy aimed at profit by the virtuous – the U.S. Foreign Policy Establishment.”
