Increase in Death Toll in Gaza as Israel States that War Will Continue “for Several More Months”

The Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip, governed by Hamas, stated on Wednesday that the death toll from the war with Israel has now exceeded 21,000 people, with reports of 195 deaths within 24 hours.

Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

2.4 million residents in Gaza are suffering from severe shortages of water, food, fuel, and medicine, with limited aid entering the territory.

Continued Israeli Bombing of Gaza

Israel has once again bombed Gaza with airstrikes and shelling after the military chief warned that the war with Hamas, which began with the group’s attacks on October 7, will continue for “several more months.”

Rising Fatalities in Gaza

The city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza experienced bombardment targeting a house near Al-Amal Hospital, resulting in the deaths of 22 people and injuries to 34 others, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza. Northern Gaza also saw intense fighting, while 11 people were injured in an airstrike near Rafah, a southern city that has become overcrowded with internally displaced persons, according to eyewitnesses.

The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has intensified, leading to increased calls for a ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly pledged to continue the campaign to destroy Hamas, an Islamist group that has been placed on the “terrorism” list by the United States and the European Union.

War Objectives and Humanitarian Consequences

The conflict erupted when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to estimates from Agence France-Presse based on Israeli figures. Palestinian militants also took around 250 hostages, 129 of whom are still held, according to Israel.

Israel responded with continuous bombing and a blockade of Gaza, followed by a ground invasion on October 27. The campaign has resulted in at least 21,110 deaths, according to the latest toll from the Gaza Health Ministry, with women and children accounting for about two-thirds of the casualties.

Humanitarian Consequences and Calls for Cessation of Hostilities

2.4 million residents in Gaza are suffering from severe shortages of water, food, fuel, and medicine, with limited aid entering the territory. The United Nations estimates that the number of displaced persons in Gaza is around 1.9 million.

Video footage from Agence France-Presse showed Palestinians who were in a United Nations school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza fleeing southwards in search of safety from the bombardment. One displaced person in Gaza said they “don’t know where to go,” indicating they are being moved from one place to another. The man added, “A solution must be reached… to implement a ceasefire instead of just sending in aid.”

Escalating Tensions in the Middle East

Violence has also erupted in the West Bank, where more than 310 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers since October 7, according to the Health Ministry there. The Israeli army announced that an operation in a refugee camp in northern West Bank resulted in the deaths of six people early Wednesday, stating it bombed the Nur Shams camp from the air.

The war has had repercussions in the Middle East, with Iranian-backed armed groups, Israel’s arch-rival, being involved in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

An Israeli airstrike on a border town in Lebanon killed a Hezbollah fighter, and the group said on Wednesday that state media reported the deaths of two of his relatives as well.

Hezbollah later announced on Wednesday that it launched a barrage of 30 rockets toward northern Israel “in response to the enemy’s repeated crimes.”

In Syria, an Israeli airstrike on Monday killed Iranian general Razi Musawi, the top military commander in the Quds Force, the external arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran has vowed to avenge Musawi’s death, whose body was to be transferred for burial after a memorial service at Shiite holy sites in Iraq on Wednesday.

Houthi rebels in Yemen fired at Israel and shipping vessels passing through the Red Sea in attacks in solidarity with Hamas.

The U.S. military announced that it shot down more than a dozen Houthi drone attack aircraft and several missiles, stating that there were no casualties or damages.

The Israeli army said on Tuesday that a fighter jet over the Red Sea intercepted “an enemy aerial target that was heading towards Israeli territory.”
