A video posted by George Santos, the former Republican congressman from New York, on Wednesday morning called on Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams to “resign in shame” after the embattled former congressman claimed his car was stolen, although Adams’ office denied the allegation, which is the latest in a series of accusations regarding Santos lying.
Key Facts
Santos, who became the sixth congressman to be expelled from the chamber earlier this month, posted a late-night video on platform X just after midnight on Wednesday, showing what appears to be his car with a shattered backseat window, saying: “Look at that, Mayor Adams, this is the city you run.”
In the video, Santos cursed at Adams and claimed the car was “brand new,” complaining that urban resources go only to migrants while the city is “dangerous.”
Deputy Mayor Adams for Communications, Fabien Levy, responded to Santos’ post, saying he was “99% sure” that Santos broke the car himself.
Levy also stated that the car is a 2018 model, despite Santos claiming it was new, noting that Santos had overestimated its value, referring to the Kelly Blue Book and the NYPD.
Santos later clarified that the car is “new to me only because I just bought it,” and that he didn’t reference its estimated value, complaining about his taxes being used to attack him as a private citizen on social media.
Background
Santos’s brief time in the chamber has been marred by controversy over allegations that he continually lied to campaign donors and made false statements about his family history and personal background. Facing increasing allegations, Santos was indicted in federal court in May on charges of money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements to Congress, stemming from accusations that he used campaign donations for personal expenses, including luxury clothing and car payments. Santos faced 10 additional counts in October for allegedly using donors’ personal credit cards for his personal expenses. Santos has stated that he does not wish to plead guilty to all charges. Throughout the year, Santos continued to face accusations, including in November when the House Ethics Committee issued a scathing report stating that Santos orchestrated a scheme to steal campaign donations, as part of a “continuing series of lies” to donors. The House voted, which failed to remove Santos from office in a previous vote in November, overwhelmingly to expel Santos days after that report was issued, with 105 Republicans joining 206 Democrats in support of the measure.
What to Watch
A documentary about George Santos is being prepared based on the book by Newsday writer Mark Chiusano, “The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos” for HBO, where a representative for Forbes magazine said the film will be “a darkly comedic and forensic look” at Santos’s time in Congress. Santos dismissed the film as “fiction” in an interview last week with comedian Ziwe, claiming that the film “will never happen,” although HBO later confirmed to Forbes that the film is in development.
