Adult Acne, Exhaustion, Weight Gain: Why Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Might Be the Cause
Hormonal imbalance leads to a range of symptoms, including unexplained weight gain, adult acne, and hair loss.
Causes
Although Polycystic Ovary Syndrome affects about one in ten women, this condition remains relatively misunderstood. It is the most common hormonal disorder among women aged 18 to 44, and it is the leading cause of female infertility. “There is no definitive answer as to why Polycystic Ovary Syndrome occurs,” says Dr. Anna Boratin, an endocrinologist and metabolic disease specialist at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi.
Management
There is no known cure for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, but it can be managed. People with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome are usually advised to make lifestyle changes that can help alleviate symptoms. According to Dr. Boratin, these changes include:
1. Weight loss: “When you have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, losing up to 10 percent of your body weight can help alleviate some symptoms. A doctor can provide advice on an exercise routine and dietary plan to follow for weight loss.”
2. Getting enough sleep: “Aim for seven hours or more of sleep a day, as adequate sleep can help with weight loss.”
3. Medication treatment: “Metformin, the prescribed medication that helps increase your body’s sensitivity to insulin, may help you conceive. Metformin can reduce the levels of male hormones swimming in your body that hinder your ability to get pregnant.”
4. Quitting smoking: “Smoking impairs fertility.”
5. Hair care: “Lifestyle changes such as avoiding processed and canned foods, getting enough sleep, and drinking plenty of water can help. Birth control pills and anti-androgens reduce male hormone levels. These are typically the first-line options for treating unwanted hair growth in non-desired areas.”
6. Turning to nature: “Natural dietary supplements can play a role in improving Polycystic Ovary Syndrome symptoms – some examples include stinging nettle root, green tea, peppermint tea, Vitamin D, and folic acid.”
