Conversation Between Toby and Anton

A few years ago, I wrote about how it seems that most parents have a certain age of children they connect with specifically – maybe young kids, maybe funny toddlers, maybe honest six-year-olds…

Ages 10 and 13 Are the Best

I always thought that the ages three and four would be my favorites forever – they think magically! – so nothing surprised me more than ages 10 and 13, which are truly the best. Now the boys not only make me laugh with their beauty but also with their intelligence, and I feel like I’m living with two incredibly fun friends (and 1000 dirty socks).

Funny Moments with Anton

We recently got a hamster; Anton is obsessed with it, and Toby doesn’t care at all. Last night, I told Anton: “Patrick is lucky to have you as a dad. I guess that makes me her grandma.” And he said: “Yes, and Toby is like her cousin in the fifteenth degree.”

Anton (before we got the hamster): “I need to get a male hamster so he won’t mind seeing me in my birthday dress.”

After Anton got his hair cut, he walked in the door looking upset: “My barber messed up my haircut, dude.”

Another day, I saw a beautiful watercolor in our kitchen. Me: “What is this?” Anton: “I don’t know.” Me: “But what is it really?” Anton: “I really have no idea.” Me: “But your name is written on it.” Anton: “Oh, right, I made it in art.”

Also, I feel happy watching the boys becoming more aware of the world around them. I was watching “The Golden Bachelor” with Anton (I know), and one of the women talked about her career in finance. The bachelor said: “Oh my God, that’s amazing, I’m so impressed.” Anton was quiet and then said: “Dude, that’s kind of sexist.” I asked him to explain more, and he said: “He’s acting so surprised because she can do that, but of course she can do that. It’s amazing, but it’s not surprising.” These were little nuanced things in the show, and I was so happy that he noticed them and could explain them.

Toby, the Most Fun Person to Text

Toby is the most fun person to text. This is his entire personality in four messages:

Haha, he definitely knows how much I love him:

Those boys. How did I get this lucky?

Recording our podcast episode.

Smile like Chalamet.

Playing Tenzi with my niece (on the right) and her friend.

What funny things have the kids said in your life recently? I’d love to hear…

Note: More conversations between kids, and how to talk to kids about sex, periods, and death. Plus three words that changed how I raise my kids.
