A few years ago, I wrote about how it seems that most parents have an age they connect with particularly – maybe the little ones, maybe the funny kids, maybe the honest six-year-olds…
The Ages of Ten and Thirteen
I always thought that three and four would be my favorite ages forever – they think magically! – so nothing surprised me more than the ages of ten and thirteen, which are indeed the best. Now the boys not only make me laugh with their beauty but also with their intelligence, and I feel like I’m living with two incredibly fun friends (and a thousand dirty socks).
Funny Situations
Here are some funny things the boys have said recently, starting with Anton…
We recently got a hamster; Anton is obsessed with it, and Toby couldn’t care less. Last night, I said to Anton: “Patrick is lucky to have you as a dad. I guess that makes me her grandma.” He said, “Yes, and Toby is like her fifteenth cousin.”
Anton said (before we got the hamster): “I need to get a male hamster so he won’t mind seeing me in my birthday dress.”
After Anton got his haircut, he walked through the door looking upset: “My barber messed up my hair, bro.”
On another day, I saw a beautiful watercolor in our kitchen. Me: “What is this?” Anton: “I don’t know.” Me: “But what is it about?” Anton: “I honestly have no idea.” Me: “But your name is written on it.” Anton: “Oh, yeah, I made it in art.”
Awareness of the World Around Them
I also feel moved to see the boys becoming more aware of the world around them. I was watching “The Golden Bachelor” with Anton (I know), and one of the women was talking about her career in finance. The bachelor said: “Oh my gosh, that’s amazing; I’m so impressed, oh my gosh.” Anton was quiet for a second and then said: “Bro, that’s kind of a gender thing.” I asked him to elaborate, and he said: “He’s acting so amazed that she can do that, but of course she can do that. It’s awesome, but it’s not surprising.” That was a little and sweet moment in the show, and I was so happy that he noticed it and could explain it.
Toby and Texting
Toby remains the most hilarious person to communicate with via text. Here’s his entire personality in four messages:
Haha he definitely knows how much I love him:
Those boys. How did I get so lucky?
Recording our podcast episode.
Smile like Chalamet.
Playing Tenzi with my niece (on the right) and her friend.
What funny things have your kids said recently?
I’d love to hear…
